Panthers sweep Patriots

Olivia Vaadeland delivered a pitch during the first game of a Mid-State Conference sweep over Pequot Lakes Thursday.

When Detroit Lakes swept Pequot Lakes last Tuesday, the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team was eliminated from winning the Mid-State Conference title.

Instead, the Panthers focused on sweeping Pequot Lakes Thursday to lock up second place in the conference standings.

That goal seemed out of reach when Rachel Langer's grand-slam home run capped off a seven-run second inning that gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead in the first game of this conference doubleheader finale.

However, Olivia Vaadeland shut down Pequot Lakes' offense the rest of the game as the Panthers rallied for a 9-7 win.

In the second game, the Panthers kept the momentum going as a five-run first inning sparked an 8-5 win and the sweep.

In the opener, the Panthers chipped away by scoring three times in the second inning and twice in the third before completing the comeback by scoring four runs in the sixth.

A double by Vaadeland and a two-run double by Alyssa Carlson accounted for the three runs in the second while three errors helped the Panthers score three times in the third.

Singles by Carlson and Ashley Domino, a two-run double by Vaadeland, an RBI triple by Lauren Naeve and an RBI single by Katie Just sparked the four-run sixth inning.

Domino and Naeve both went 3 for 4 to lead the Panthers' offense. Vaadeland picked up the win in relief.

Singles by Carlson, Domino and Naeve, two errors and Caitlan Isaacson's two-run single gave the Panthers a quick 5-0 lead in the second game.

Anna Grimes, Domino and Bailee Jerger singled and scored in the second to give the Panthers an 8-2 lead.

Isaacson went 3 for 4 while Domino and Jerger had two hits each for the Panthers. Jerger went the distance for the victory.

The two wins lifted Park Rapids to 9-3 in conference play while Pequot Lakes fell to 8-4. Detroit Lakes claimed the conference title with a 10-2 record.

Panthers top Sebeka

The Panthers avenged a 13-3 loss to Sebeka earlier in the season as a six-run fifth inning sparked a 7-4 victory Friday in the regular-season finale.

Vaadeland's RBI double gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first.

Sebeka scored twice in the second and once in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead before singles by Isaacson, Erika Jerger, Carlson and Grimes and doubles by Bailee Jerger and Naeve sparked the six-run fifth.

Grimes went 2 for 4 while Bailee Jerger scattered 11 hits for the win as the Panthers ended the regular season with a 15-5 record.
