Panthers face Frazee, Braves host Pillager as tournament begins

Park Rapids and Nevis will travel while Menahga will play at home as the section boys basketball playoffs begin Monday night.

Park Rapids received the No. 9 seed and will play at No. 8 Frazee Tuesday night at 7 in the first round of the South Section 8AA tournament. The Panthers, who carried a 1-22 record into Friday night's regular-season finale against Hawley, defeated Frazee 63-59 earlier in the year for their only win of the season. Frazee is 2-23.

The other section seeds still had to be determined, but it's likely the winner of that game will travel to Perham Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off in a subsection quarterfinal game.

The Section 5A bracket is set and the West half of the section will begin play Monday night at 7 with No. 6 Menahga hosting No. 11 Pillager. Menahga ended the regular season with a 12-12 record, including two wins over Pillager during the regular season. The Braves swept the series from the Huskies by scores of 80-52 and 51-47. Pillager enters tournament play with a 2-22 record. The winner of that game travels to No. 3 Browerville Thursday night at 7.

Nevis, the No. 5 seed, received a first-round bye and will play at No. 4 Bertha-Hewitt Thursday night at 7. Bertha-Hewitt defeated the Tigers 44-32 in their regular-season meeting. The Bears are 17-6 on the season while Nevis carries a 20-5 record into the playoffs. The winner of that game will most likely face No. 1 Sebeka at Wadena next Saturday night at 6 in a subsection semifinal game.
