Jensen, EGF oust Panthers from playoffs

The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team couldn't contain one of the state's top scorers in the Section 8A quarterfinals Thursday night.

Leah Jensen, who will play hockey at the University of North Dakota next season, scored four goals in leading No. 4-seeded East Grand Forks to a 4-1 win over the No. 5-seeded Panthers in the first round of the section playoffs at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Jensen has 53 goals on the season, trailing only Morris/Benson's Dani Schultz, who has 73 goals.

Jensen tipped in a rebound at the 5:45 mark of the first period and scored on a two-on-one break at the 10:34 mark of the second period to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead.

Park Rapids closed the gap when Jessica Gapinski set up Hannah Williams for a power-play goal at the 10:45 mark of the third period.

The Panthers were on another power play when Jensen scored a shorthanded goal with 2:51 to play. Jensen sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 1:02 remaining.

Goalie Shania Johnson made 21 saves as the Panthers end the season with a 10-15 record.
