Tigers top Panthers in overtime

The first victory of the season eluded the Park Rapids girls basketball team Thursday night when Nevis prevailed 56-52 in overtime at the Century School gym.

The second half saw four ties and seven lead changes before Anna Grimes' layup at the buzzer tied the game at 49-49 at the end of regulation.

A jumper by Megan Norby gave Nevis a 51-49 lead with 3:42 to play in overtime before Ashley Domino's basket off a rebound tied it with 3:22 remaining.

Riley Hanson hit a free throw with 3:08 to play before Paige Walters' layup gave the Tigers a 54-51 lead with 1:49 remaining.

After Alyssa Carlson hit a free throw with 1:28 left, Nevis sealed the win on a pair of free throws by Mattie Hjelseth in the final :07.

In addition to a strong finish, the Tigers had a strong start as a three-point play by Norby and jumpers by Hjelseth and Norby gave Nevis a 7-0 lead at the 14:42 mark.

A layup by Carlson at the 12:22 mark and a basket off a rebound by Grimes pulled the Panthers to within 9-5 with10:01 to play in the first half.

A jumper by Walters and two free throws by Norby pushed Nevis' advantage to 13-5 with 9:19 remaining.

Park Rapids put together an 11-1 run to take the lead. Carlson fed Grimes and Olivia Vaadeland for layups and Lydia Lutz hit a 3-pointer to make it 14-12. Two free throws by Carlson and a jumper by CarsonLee Christenson gave Park Rapids a 16-14 lead with 4:01 to play in the first half.

Two free throws by Jordan Walters tied the game at 16-16 with 3:54 left before a jumper by Carlson, a jumper by Christenson and a layup off a steal by Christenson gave Park Rapids a 22-16 lead with 2:33 remaining.

Norby scored off a rebound before a 3-pointer by Carlson gave the Panthers a 25-18 lead with 59 seconds left. Two free throws by Norby pulled Nevis to within 25-20 at the half.

Layups by Lutz and Christenson pushed the Panthers' advantage to 30-24 with 15:13 to play before a jumper by Hanson, a 3-pointer by Bettsy Hjelseth and a jumper by Paige Walters gave Nevis a 31-30 edge with 12:27 remaining.

Carlson hit a 3-pointer and a short jumper as the Panthers led 35-33 with 10:42 to play.

A jumper by Bettsy Hjelseth and two free throws by Paige Walters gave Nevis a 37-35 edge at the 9:13 mark before two free throws and a layup by Grimes put the Panthers ahead 40-37 with 7:03 remaining.

Bettsy Hjelseth scored off a rebound, but a jumper by Vaadeland and a layup by Grimes gave the Panthers a 45-41 lead with 3:03 left.

Norby hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to give the Tigers a 46-45 edge with 2:31 showing.

A layup by Christenson gave Park Rapids a 47-46 lead with 1:59 to play before a layup by Norby with 55 seconds left and a free throw by Olivia Toft with :13 remaining gave Nevis a 49-47 lead.

Grimes' layup at the buzzer forced overtime before the Tigers prevailed despite missing five free throws in overtime. The Panthers also missed five free throws in the extra session.

Norby finished with a game-high 23 points and Paige Walters added 10 points to lead the Tigers, who improved to 9-8.

Carlson scored a career-high 17 points and Grimes added a career-high 12 points to lead the Panthers. Christenson also hit double figures with 10 points as the Panthers fell to 0-18.
