Panthers edge Prairie Centre to avenge loss

Ian Johnson's two goals and Sam Coborn's three assists sparked the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 5-3 Mid-State Conference win over Prairie Centre Tuesday night at the Walker Area Community Center.

The Panthers scored four unanswered goals to avenge a 5-3 loss to Prairie Centre on Jan. 20.

Coborn set up Johnson for the game's first goal at the 7:11 mark of the first period.

After Prairie Centre took a 2-1 lead on Ryan Connor's power-play goal and Nate Mettenburg's goal, the Panthers used goals by Johnson and Benson Ringle late in the second period and goals by Levi Erickson and Noah MacPherson in the third period to claim the win.

Erickson and Coborn assisted on Johnson's second goal of the game at the 15:09 mark and Kyle Kanten set up Ringle at the 16:20 mark to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.

Coborn assisted on Erickson's goal at the 3:53 mark before Kanten and Bailey Mueller were credited with assists on MacPherson's goal at the 15:30 mark to seal the win. Tyler Schultz scored with 24 seconds to play to end the scoring.

Goalie Scott Smith made 18 saves as the Panthers improved to 4-2-1 in the conference and 9-8-1 overall. Prairie Centre fell to 2-4 in conference games and 7-13 overall.

Park Rapids' game at Lake of the Woods that was postponed because of the weather last Friday night has been rescheduled for Feb. 18. The junior varsity game will be played at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
