Brand's hat trick seals win over Pequot Lakes

McKenna Brand's hat trick in the third period sealed the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley's 5-3 win over Pequot Lakes Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Brand, who has seven hat tricks this season, broke the Panthers' record for goals in a single season with 27. Diana Olson held the old record of 25.

Despite holding a 32-7 advantage in shots on goal through the first two periods, the host Panthers managed only a 2-0 lead.

Brand assisted on a goal by Jessica Gapinski at the 6:20 mark of the first period while Alex Pederson scored at the 13:43 mark of the second period to give the Panthers the 2-0 lead.

Brand opened the final period with her first goal of the game as Park Rapids claimed a 3-0 advantage.

After Pequot Lakes closed the gap to 3-2 on goals by Kaylyn Eggena and Alex Palm within a span of 2:02, Gapinski and Hannah Williams set up Brand at the 8:55 mark to give the Panthers a 4-2 edge.

Haley Monson's goal at the 12:39 mark pulled the Patriots to within 4-3, but Brand completed her hat trick with 1:38 to play to seal the win.

Bailey Moore made 11 saves for the Panthers, who held a 42-14 edge in shots. Pequot Lakes fell to 6-15.

EGF picks up section win

East Grand Forks held the Panthers to only 15 shots on goal en route to a 6-2 victory Saturday afternoon in a battle of Section 8A foes.

Goals by Alex Eades and Rachel Nelson gave EGF a 2-0 lead before Bailee Jerger scored at the 13:03 mark. Abby Fischer assisted on the Panthers' first goal.

Allie Bade's power-play goal at the 12:19 mark of the second period tied the game at 2-2. The Green Wave responded with goals by Leah Jensen and Emily Swenson to carry a 4-2 lead into the final period.

East Grand Forks sealed the win on goals by Jordyn Konze and Swenson in the third period.

Moore made 28 saves as the Panthers fell to 1-7 against Section 8A opponents and 7-11 overall. EGF improved to 4-3-1 against section foes and 13-8-1 overall.
