Baker's goal in OT lifts DL past Panthers

Nate Baker's goal at the 4:17 mark in overtime gave Detroit Lakes a 6-5 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team Tuesday night at Detroit Lakes.

Goals by Levi Erickson and Sam Coborn gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead after the first period. Cory Odland, Noah MacPherson and Ian Johnson had assists on those two goals.

The Lakers held a 16-7 edge in shots on goal in the second period, but a goal by Kody Walsh and a power-play goal by Coborn kept the Panthers in front 4-3. Zach Strandlie and Erickson had assists for Park Rapids. Alex Mason scored twice and Baker had a goal for Detroit Lakes in that period.

After Mason completed his hat trick with a power-play goal early in the third period to tie the game, Johnson assisted on a power-play goal by Lucas Maves to put the Panthers back in front.

The Lakers forced overtime on Kirby Inderrieden's goal with 2:27 to play before Mason assisted on Baker's game-winner in overtime.

Scott Smith finished with 31 saves for the Panthers, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Detroit Lakes improved to 5-1.

In the Panthers' 6-4 win at Greenway on Dec. 7, Cody Brumbaugh was the winning goalie. Brumbaugh allowed two goals and made 18 saves after replacing Smith in the first period.
