Perham runners sweep titles

If Monday's Park Rapids Invitational is any indication, the Section 8A girls cross-country meet is going to be a battle.

Perham captured the girls title at Headwaters Country Club with 69 points. Warroad (91), Park Rapids (98) and Roseau (101) followed. Throw in Staples-Motley and you're going to have five teams bat-tling for the two state berths at the section meet at Bagley next Friday.

In the boys race Monday, Perham ran away with the title with 24 points. Perham is the top-ranked team in the latest state Class A poll. Thief River Falls (111) and West Central Area (125) followed while Park Rapids finished fourth out of 16 teams with 131 points.

Victoria Alexander of Lake of the Woods led the girls field with a winning time of 14:42. Alexander was rated as the No. 3 runner in the latest state Class A poll. Park Rap-ids' Lydia Lutz was second, covering the 4,000-meter course in 14:53.

Rounding out the Pan-thers' team score were Alex Pederson (18th in 16:03), Morgan Olson (25th in 16:24), Shelby Pierce (28th in 16:30), Kaylee Hilmanowski (33rd in 16:40) and Lora Remus (39th in 16:48).

Perham entered the meet ranked No. 9 in the state while the Panthers were rated No. 13.

Nevis' Bryon Schuldt took first in the boys meet by cov-ering the 5,000-meter course in 16:05. Thief River Falls' Brendan Skime was second in 16:10. Schuldt was ranked No. 6 and Skime was rated No. 10 in the latest state Class A poll.

Leading the Panthers to fourth place were Taylor Kimball (12th in 17:42), Isaac Overmyer (16th in 17:57), Bai-ley Mueller (38th in 18:47), Jake Waggoner (39th in 18:48), Tanner Otterness (41st in 18:52), Zac Haugland (44th in 19:02) and Matt Sullivan (57th in 19:27).

Competing for Park Rapids in the junior varsity race were Ryan McBrady (20:02), Jacob Hays (20:05), Nate Carlson (20:07), Travis Deitchler (20:30), Kevin Merfeld (20:46), Josh Hays (22:11) and Ben Kading (24:13).

In the 3,200-meter junior high race, Adam Mackley (11th in 13:04), Chase Brand (27th in 14:07), Matt Konshok (34thin 14:24), Wesley La-Coursiere (38th in 14:37), Ja-cob Bridgman (43rd in 14:53), Jack Christenson (49th in 15:24) and Justin Dravis (52nd in 15:37) competed for the Park Rapids boys while Alex Kirlin (28th in 17:24) com-peted for the Panthers in the girls race.
