Six Panthers earn Mid-State honors

A runner-up finish in the Mid-State Conference standings gave the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team six spots on the all-conference roster.

Seniors Leeza Tostenson, Brie Warne and Shelby Weckwerth were among 17 players earning all-conference honors. Senior Jenny Palm, junior Alyssa Carlson and sophomore Olivia Vaadeland received all-conference honorable mention honors.

The Panthers finished with a 9-3 record in conference play to finish second behind Detroit Lakes' 11-1 mark. Wadena-Deer Creek was third at 8-4, followed by Perham at 6-6, Staples-Motley at 5-7, Pequot Lakes at 3-9 and Crosby-Ironton at 0-12.

A major reason for the Panthers success in conference play was the play of the six all-conference players.

Weckwerth started 12 games in center field and batted .429 (15 for 35) with 12 runs, 10 stolen bases and five RBI.

Carlson was the Panthers' starting shortstop in 12 games and hit .273 (12 for 44, including a double) with 11 runs, 10 RBI and five stolen bases.

Vaadeland started 12 games at first base and hit .317 (13 for 41, including four doubles, one triple and one homer) with 15 runs, 12 RBI and two stolen bases. Vaadeland also made five pitching appearances, going 2-0 with a 2.80 ERA. Vaadeland pitched 10 innings and gave up 10 hits, seven runs (four earned) with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Palm started 12 games at second base and batted .207 (6 for 29, including two doubles) with seven runs and three RBI.

The other all-conference players were Detroit Lakes' Callea Butz, Amalea Branden, Brianna Seebold and Donna Wicker; W-DC's Stephanie Hahn, Sam Holweger and Leah Dykhoff; Perham's Steph Miller and Kaila Formanek; Staples' Abby Edin and Lonna Dumpprope; Pequot Lakes' Brooke Serfling and Kayla Wangen; and C-I's Kayla Sorben.
