Pirates eliminate Panthers with 6-1 quarterfinal win
The season ended for the Park Rapids boys tennis team as Crookston posted a 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the Section 8A tournament Tuesday at Thief River Falls.
Max Brown and Scott Smith coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles to account for the Panthers' only win. Park Rapids entered as the No. 6 seed.
The No. 3-seeded Pirates dropped only four games in sweeping the four singles matches and added straight-set wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles to defeat Park Rapids by a 6-1 margin for the third time this season.
The loss ended Park Rapids' record in dual meets at 3-10.
In Tuesday's other quarterfinal matches, No. 1 Thief River Falls blanked No. 8 Perham 7-0, No. 5 East Grand Forks defeated No. 4 Staples-Motley 5-2, and No. 2 Detroit Lakes blanked No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek 7-0.
In the semifinals, Thief River Falls defeated East Grand Forks 6-1 and Crookston eliminated Detroit Lakes 5-2. Thief River Falls repeated as section champs with a 6-1 win over Crookston in the finals.
