Late run lifts Warroad girls past Panthers

An 8-0 run to end the game gave Warroad a 56-47 win over the Park Rapids girls basketball team Friday night at the Area High School gym.

Warroad jumped out to a 10-1 lead and didn't trail the rest of the game. However, the Panthers had several opportunities to overcome that deficit.

Two jumpers by Hannah Wolff, a jumper by Hailey Lundin, two free throws apiece by Carson Lee Christenson and Ashley Domino, and a 3-pointer by Alyssa Carlson pulled the Panthers to within 16-14 with 4:30 to play in the first half.

A jumper by Sophie Shogren accounted for Park Rapids' only points the rest of the half as Warroad carried a 21-16 edge into the break.

A layup by Christenson, a basket off a rebound by Lundin and a layup by Domino kept the Panthers within 24-22 with 14:16 to play before Warroad went on a 10-3 run to claim a 34-25 lead with 9:58 left.

The Panthers rallied behind jumpers by Christenson and Wolff and a 3-pointer by Wolff to close the deficit to 34-32 with 7:21 remaining.

Three jumpers by Wolff, a layup by Domino and a jumper by Christenson made it 44-43 with 4:07 left.

A jumper by Lundin and a layup by Domino had the Panthers within 48-47 with 2:15 remaining, but Warroad ended the game with an 8-0 run to seal the win.

Wolff led the Panthers with 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Lundin had seven rebounds, Christenson and Olivia Vaadeland had six rebounds each, and Lundin and Carlson had three assists each as the Panthers fell to 1-10 on the season.

Miranda Pearson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Warriors, who improved to 7-5 on the season.

Park Rapids traveled to Thief River Falls Tuesday night and will play at Detroit Lakes in a Mid-State Conference game.
