Kinkel captures conference crown

Natalie Kinkel lived up to her No. 1 seed and captured the No. 1 singles title at the Mid-State Conference girls tennis tournament at Wadena and Perham on Sept. 16.

Kinkel rallied to defeat Perham/New York Mills' Makayla Melvin 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 in the championship match to account for Park Rapids' only championship.

Pequot Lakes won titles at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles, No. 4 singles, No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles to claim the team title with 44 points. Perham/New York Mills was second with 35 points while the Panthers finished third in this seven-team tournament with 33 points.

The Panthers reached the finals at two other positions as Abby Morris fell to Pequot Lakes' Courtney Boller 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match at No. 3 singles while Kendra Coborn and Gracie Eischens fell to Pequot Lakes' Elli Saxerud and Madeline Sherman 6-2, 5-7, 10-2 in the finals at No. 2 doubles. Morris entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed while Coborn and Eischens were the No. 3 seed.

Tori Hilmanowski finished third at No. 3 singles while Meagan Powers at No. 4 singles, Olivia Wallace and Chloe Johnson at No. 1 doubles, and Jada Renneberg and Rachael Herman at No. 3 doubles captured consolation titles by winning fifth-place matches. Hilmanowski was the No. 3 seed, Powers was the No. 5 seed, Wallace and Johnson were the No. 7 seed, and Renneberg and Herman were the No. 4 seed.

Team scores: Pequot Lakes 44, Perham/New York Mills 35, Park Rapids 33, Staples-Motley 30, Detroit Lakes 29, Crosby-Ironton 14, Wadena-Deer Creek 11.

Panthers split duals

The Panthers split dual meets at the Depot Courts Tuesday afternoon, following a 6-1 loss to Thief River Falls with a 5-2 win over East Grand Forks.

Kinkel prevailed in straight sets at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-1) to account for Park Rapids' only win against Thief River Falls.

Against EGF, Kinkel (6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles), Hilmanowski (6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles) and Morris (6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles) coasted to straight-set wins in singles play while the Wallace/Johnson and Renneberg/Herman duos posted straight-set wins in doubles. Wallace and Johnson won a first-set tiebreaker 9-7 in a 7-6, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot while Renneberg and Herman closed out the win at No. 3 doubles by winning a tiebreaker 7-1 in the second set in a 6-4, 7-6 victory. Coborn and Eischens dropped two close matches in a 7-5, 7-6 loss at No. 2 doubles.

The win over EGF gave the Panthers a 4-2 record against Section 8A opponents. Park Rapids improved to 9-7 overall in dual meets.
