Panthers control Pirates in Section 8AA match

Jaiden McCollum pounded down 21 kills in 26 attempts while Kaisa Coborn, Katelyn Weaver and Rilee Michaelson combined to serve 10 aces and 41 points as the Park Rapids volleyball team rolled to an easy win over Crookston Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

Kamree Carlson added 10 kills and Kennedy Carlson had 37 set assists in the Panthers' 25-12, 25-12, 25-8 victory in this match between Section 8AA teams.

After Coborn opened the match with a kill, Weaver served an ace and six straight points to give the Panthers an 8-1 advantage. McCollum and Coborn had kills during that run. Kamree Carlson's tip, kill and ace serve made it 13-6 before Michaelson's kill and two ace serves and a kill by McCollum extended the lead to 17-7. Two kills by McCollum and another winning tip by Kamree Carlson closed out Set 1.

Crookston jumped out to a 4-0 lead in Set 2 before a kill and ace serve by Michaelson and two kills by McCollum tied the set at 5-5. Coborn served an ace and six straight points as kills by Kamree Carlson and McCollum gave Park Rapids a 12-7 advantage. Kamree Carlson had a kill before Michaelson served three points for a 22-11 lead. McCollum and Coborn had kills during Michaelson's serve. Three straight kills by McCollum ended that set.

A tip, kill and block by McCollum and a kill and ace serve by Weaver gave the Panthers a 6-1 lead in Set 3 before Coborn served two aces and nine points during a 10-0 run as Park Rapids took control with a 16-2 advantage. McCollum had a pair of kills while Kennedy Carlson had a pair of winning tips during that run. Another kill by McCollum, a tip by Michaelson, kills by Weaver and Michaelson, and a kill by Coborn made it 22-8 before Kortne Byer served the final three points as a kill by McCollum ended the match.

Coborn and Kamree Carlson tallied 11 digs apiece as the Panthers improved to 4-0 against section teams and 7-0 overall. Park Rapids remained in the No. 15 spot in this week's state Class AA poll.

Rachel Hefta's six kills and Aleece Durbin's six digs led the Pirates, who fell to 1-2 in section play and 3-5 overall.
