It's been a tale of contrasting seasons for the Park Rapids and Detroit Lakes volleyball teams.

Park Rapids entered Thursday night's Mid-State Conference match undefeated while the Lakers were searching for their first victory of the season.

Thanks to a dominating first set, the start to the season continued for both teams as the Panthers remained perfect on the season following a 25-8, 25-22, 25-16 victory at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers controlled Set 1 as two kills by Jaiden McCollum and an ace serve by Katelyn Weaver produced a quick 7-1 lead. Kaisa Coborn served four aces and eight points to extend the advantage to 16-2. McCollum, Kamree Carlson and Coborn had kills during that stretch. Two kills apiece by Carlson and Coborn and a kill by Rilee Michaelson closed out the opening set.

Detroit Lakes responded in Set 2 and claimed a 17-15 lead. Michaelson served two aces and had two kills while Carlson had three kills at the start. Coborn and Weaver also had kills during that span. A tip by Michaelson started the Panthers' 10-5 run to close out the set. Kennedy Carlson served three points and McCollum had a kill down the stretch.

"We played with a lot of confidence in the first set, but we started making errors in the second set," said Park Rapids head coach Stephanie Hanson. "Mistakes are going to happen. We hung in there when things weren't going our way. It wasn't pretty, but we made it happen, which is huge for us. We battled through and we got to 25 first."

Kills by Coborn and Kamree Carlson tied Set 3 at 4-4 before Coborn served two aces and Kamree Carlson followed with two kills to give the Panthers an 11-5 advantage. Kills by Michaelson, Coborn and McCollum made it 19-12 before kills by Kamree Carlson and McCollum helped close out the match.

Kameee Carlson finished with 12 kills, McCollum added 10 kills, Coborn served six aces and 11 points and Weaver served 10 points as the Panthers overcame 12 hitting errors and 10 service errors. Kennedy Carlson tallied 31 set assists while Kamree Carlson led the defense with 13 digs.

The win lifted Park Rapids to 2-0 in the conference and 6-0 overall while the Lakers fell to 0-6 in their Mid-State opener.

"DL is a tough team to play, so this was a good win for us," said Hanson. "The girls keep getting better and keep learning and keep putting us in a position to win. Our strength is we win as a team. The girls are doing a good job of doing whatever it takes to win as a team."
