Tinnes, McCollum reach podium at state
Nevis' Logan Tinnes and Park Rapids' Jaiden McCollum earned medals during Saturday's finals of the state Class A track and field meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Tinnes, a senior who was making his state debut, finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.18. Tinnes qualified for the finals by placing fourth in 15.75 during Friday's preliminaries. Pequot Lakes' Reid Pierzinski won the state title in 14.67.
McCollum earned a medal for the second year in a row by placing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 11 inches. The Park Rapids junior placed fourth last season. Emma Gilbert of International Falls won the state title with a throw of 42-7.75.
Park Rapids freshman Kamree Carlson finished 16th out of 17 throwers in the shot put with a throw of 35-3 while the Panthers' 4 x 800 relay team of Seth Breitweser, Matt Benson, Jack Christenson and Adam Jacobi placed 14th with a time of 8:34.82. Mora won the state title in 8:10.75.
During Friday's finals of the 3,200 run, Park Rapids senior Lydia Kantonen placed 16th in 12:19.54 while Tierney Wolfgren of Math & Science Academy took first in 10:41.84.
Park Rapids' 4 x 200 relay team of Hannah Morgan, Abby Eystad, Carlson and McCollum failed to advance to the finals after placing 14th in 1:50.45 during Friday's preliminaries. Pequot Lakes had the fastest preliminary time of 1:44.39.
Nevis' 4 x 100 relay team of Tinnes, Kyle Schmidt, Jack DeWulf and Zach Henry also failed to qualify for the finals by placing 17th in 45.71 during Friday's prelimnaries. Foley had the top preliminary time of 43.39.
