Panthers compete at state True Team meet

Lydia Kantonen won the 3,200-meter run while Jaiden McCollum was the runner-up in the shot put as the Park Rapids girls track and field team placed eighth at Saturday's state Class A True Team meet at Stillwater.

Kantonen clocked an 11:56.10 to lead the field in the 3,200 run while McCollum threw the shot put 37 feet, 10 inches to take second as the Panthers compiled 277.50 points in this nine-team meet. Osakis claimed the team title with 388.50 points while Luverne was second with 387 points.

In the True Team format, each team enters two competitors in each individual event and one team in the four relays. Every competitor scores points with first place receiving 18 points and 18th place receiving 1 point in the individual events and the winning relay team earning 27 points with ninth place earning 3 points.

Park Rapids scored 32 points in the 3,200 run behind Kantonen and Jada Renneberg's fifth-place time of 12:42.60 while the Panthers also scored 32 points in the shot put behind McCollum and Kamree Carlson's fourth-place throw of 35-1.

Carlson's seventh-place time of 1:05.20 and McCollum's eighth-place time of 1:05.36 in the 400 dash added 23 points to the team total while Coral Johnson (at 8-6) and Caroline Drury (at 8-0) scored 20 points in the pole vault by placing eighth and 10th, respectively.

Katelyn Warmbold (sixth at 31-7) and Hannah Morgan (13th at 29-3.75) scored 19 points in the triple jump while McCollum (eighth at 95-1) and Carlson (11th at 87-7) scored 19 points in the discus. The 4 x 800 relay team of Tori Hilmanowski, Kayleah Breitweser, Paige Johnson and Kantonen scored 18 points by placing fourth in 10:37.96.

Park Rapids also scored 14 points in both the 800 run and 100 hurdles; 12.50 points in the high jump; 12 points in the 1,600 run, 4 x 200 relay and 4 x 400 relay; 10 points in the long jump; 9 points in the 100 dash; 8 points in the 200 dash and 300 hurdles; and 3 points in the 4 x 100 relay.

The Panthers placed sixth with 295 points at last year's state meet.
