Maija Hovelsrud qualified for the state Class A girls swimming meet by placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke at Saturday's Section 8A meet at Bemidji.

The Park Rapids junior clocked a 1:10.49 to earn her first trip to state. Thief River Falls' Marley Nelson took first in 1:09.51 while Bemidji's Alyssa Mess was third in 1:12.12.

Park Rapids finished sixth in the team standings with 141 points. Bemidji won the section title for the sixth year in a row with 421 points. Detroit Lakes was second in the 11-team field with 384.50 points.

Hovelsrud will make her state debut Thursday when the Class A preliminaries begin at noon at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The finals will be held Friday.
