Panthers sweep pair from Patriots

Josh Severtson slid into third base as Pequot Lakes’ Chad Christianson waited for the throw in the second game of a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Thursday. The Panthers won both games.

Park Rapids’ pitching staff limited Pequot Lakes to three earned runs as the Panthers swept a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Thursday at the Area High School field.

Tyler McCollum and Rilee Johnson combined on a four-hitter as the Panthers won the first game 7-3. Drew Bade, Derek Porozinski and Jordan McCollum combined on a three-hitter as Park Rapids completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the second game.

In the opener, a four-run third inning sparked the Panthers to the victory.

Singles by Jordan McCollum, Josh Severtson, Bade, Johnson and Jon Burlingame and a sacrifice fly by Porozinski gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead.

Pequot Lakes scored once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to cut the gap to 4-3 before the Panthers sealed the win by scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth. Singles by Jordan McCollum, Severtson, Bade and Porozinski and two errors provided the three insurance runs.

Bade went 4 for 4 with two runs and three RBI while both Jordan McCollum and Severtson went 2 for 4 with two runs to pace the Panthers’ 12-hit attack. Tyler McCollum gave up one unearned run on two hits over the first four innings for the win while Johnson allowed two runs on two hits over the final three innings.

In the second game, the Panthers scored once in the fifth to tie the game before a three-run sixth inning completed the sweep.

Singles by Burlingame, Brad Eischens and Connor Byer gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the second before Pequot Lakes scored twice in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

Jordan McCollum was hit by a pitch and scored on a balk to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth before the Panthers produced the winning runs in the sixth. With two outs, Tyler McCollum walked and Byer singled before RBI singles by Jordan McCollum and Bade made it 5-2.

Jordan McCollum went 2 for 3 with two runs and three stolen bases, Bade went 2 for 3 and Byer went 2 for 3 to lead the Panthers’ nine-hit attack. Bade gave up two runs on three hits over the first five innings. Porozinski pitched a scoreless sixth for the win while Jordan McCollum struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh for the save.

The sweep lifted Park Rapids to 5-1 in the conference and 7-2 overall while the Patriots fell to 1-3 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
