Panthers pin way to easy wins over Virginia, WHAN

     Eleven pins and five forfeits led the Park Rapids wrestling team to a pair of dual victories Thursday night at the Century School gym.

     The Panthers won the final 10 matches, including six by pins, in a 60-18 victory over Virginia and followed with 10 straight wins, including five by pins, in a 60-18 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis. Virginia defeated WHAN 42-27 in the other match.

     In the first dual, Virginia used three pins to jump out to an 18-4 lead before the Panthers dominated the rest of the meet.

     Jared Sunram’s pair of nearfalls and takedown in the second period and reversal and nearfall in the third period sparked a 13-2 major decision at 120 pounds to account for the Panthers’ only win in the first four matches.

     Nolan Booge made his season debut with a first-period pin at 132; Logan Johnson used a takedown, reversal and nearfall in the first period and pair of takedowns in the second period for a 12-4 major decision at 138; and Laine Jensen used takedowns and nearfalls in the first and second periods for an 8-0 major decision at 145 as the Panthers tied the meet at 18-18.

     Cody Dravis at 152, Justin Dravis at 160, Zach Nelson at 170 and Zack Tretbar at 182 followed with pins as the Panthers claimed a 42-18 lead. Forfeit wins by Jacob Bittmann at 195 and Logan Veo at 220 and Chris Baxter’s pin at 285 capped off the win.

     In the win over WHAN, the Panthers won 11 of the first 12 matches in building a 60-6 lead.

     Landen Burlingame opened the dual with two takedowns and a nearfall in the first period, a takedown in the second period and a reversal in the third period for a 12-7 minor decision at 106.

     Sunram started the run of 10 straight wins with an 8-0 major decision at 120 behind a takedown and reversal in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third period.

     Kian Scott received a forfeit win at 126 before Booge and Johnson recorded pins at 132 and 138 for a 24-6 lead.

     After Jensen’s forfeit win at 145, Cody Dravis and Justin Dravis posted first-period pins at 152 and 160 as the Panthers extended their advantage to 42-6.

     Forfeit wins by Nelson at 170 and Tretbar at 182 and John Kyllonen’s first-period pin at 195 concluded the scoring for the Panthers.

     Dustin McGee’s pin at 120, Jordan Spenst’s 7-3 minor decision at 152, Truman Crandall’s pin at 160, Dakota Zimmer’s pin at 182 and Nick Fisher’s pin at 285 accounted for WHAN’s points in a 42-27 loss to Virginia.

     The two wins lifted Park Rapids’ record in dual meets to 4-8. Virginia is 5-8 while WHAN fell to 0-6.

Three Panthers win tourney titles

     Jensen, Justin Dravis and Kyllonen captured titles as the Panthers claimed runner-up honors at Saturday’s Nighthawk Invitational at Parkers Prairie.

     Jensen defeated Minnewaska Area’s Weston Lardy 4-0 in the title match at 145 pounds, Dravis pinned Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s Remington Meagher in the championship match at 152 and Kyllonen posted a 4-2 decision over Staples-Motley’s Drew Peterson in the title match at 182.

     Also placing for the Panthers were Sunram (fourth at 120), Booge (fourth at 126), Nelson (fourth at 160), Veo (fourth at 220), Baxter (fifth at 285) and Tretbar (sixth at 170).

     Benson won the team title with 168 points while the Panthers followed with 144.50 points in this 11-team tournament.
