Panthers split dual meets with Cardinals, Road Crew

     Two pins and four forfeits led the Park Rapids wrestling team to a 46-30 win over Staples-Motley in the first of two Mid-State Conference dual meets Friday night at the Century School gym.

     Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus used five pins and four forfeits for a 60-7 win over the Panthers in the final dual. PLPRB defeated Staples-Motley 51-9 in the other dual in this triangular meet.

     In the first dual, Staples-Motley used four forfeits to claim a 24-6 lead before the Panthers rallied for the win.

     Jared Sunram’s second-period pin at 120 pounds was the Panthers’ only win in the first five matches before Logan Johnson’s third-period takedown led to a 5-3 decision at 138 and Laine Jensen’s first-period pin at 145 cut the deficit to 24-15. Forfeit wins by Cody Dravis at 152, Justin Dravis at 160 and Zach Nelson at 170 gave Park Rapids a 33-24 lead.

     Zack Tretbar used a reversal and nearfall in the second period to spark a 10-2 major decision at 182 and John Kyllonen received a forfeit win at 195 for a 43-24 advantage. Chris Baxter’s escape and takedown in the third period led to a 3-0 decision at 285 to end the match.

     PLPRB jumped out to a 27-0 lead behind four forfeits en route to the win over Park Rapids in the finale.

     Johnson used a reversal, nearfall and takedown in the second period for a 9-2 lead before needing a reversal in the third period to force overtime in the 138-pound match. Johnson’s takedown capped a 13-11 decision. Jensen followed with three nearfalls for an 11-0 major decision at 145 as the Panthers cut the gap to 27-7.

     The Road Crew won the final seven matches, including the final five via pins, to seal the win.

     PLPRB, which is rated No. 14 in the latest state Class AA poll, improved to 3-0 in conference duals and 8-0 overall. Park Rapids is now 2-1 in the conference and 2-7 overall while Staples-Motley fell to 1-3 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
