Warroad blanks Panthers

Julia Renner controlled the puck during Park Rapids’ 7-0 loss to Warroad Tuesday night.

  Lynn Astrup’s goal and three assists and Dani Knott’s 20 saves led Warroad to a 7-0 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

     Warroad held a 19-3 advantage in shot on goal during a scoreless first period before Mariah Gardner’s two goals and a goal by Francesca Huerd gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead after the second period.

     Goals by Danicka Huerd, Demi Gardner, Sara Baumann and Astrup concluded the scoring in the third period as Warroad finished with a 57-20 advantage in shots.

     Goalie Shania Johnson finished with 50 saves for the Panthers, who were shut out for the second time by Warroad and for the fourth time this season.

     Warroad, which is rated No. 5 in this week’s state Class A poll, improved to 3-2 against Section 8A teams and 5-5-1 overall while the Panthers fell to 0-5-1 in the section and 4-8-1 overall.
