Panthers coast to wins over W-DC, LOW

     Jamie Stewart scored four goals as the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team picked up a Mid-State Conference win and a victory over a Section 8A opponent.

     The Panthers opened conference play with a 7-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday night and followed with a 5-0 victory over section rival Lake of the Woods Saturday afternoon.

     The two wins lifted Park Rapids to 4-1 overall.

Stewart, Brand lead Panthers

     Stewart and Chase Brand scored two goals apiece in leading the Panthers past W-DC.

     Cody Koebernick opened the scoring on assists from Dylan Weaver and Matt DeLaHunt with 3:06 remaining in the first period.

     A four-goal second period pushed the Panthers’ lead to 5-0. Kiefer Miller and Connor Kennedy set up a power-play goal by Drew Bade at the 2:53 mark before Bade assisted on a goal by Stewart at the 8:23 mark. Stewart followed with another goal at the 10:27 mark on an assist by Kennedy before Micah Barrett set up Brand at the 10:41 mark.

     After Michael Behl scored shorthanded to open the third period for the Wolverines’ lone goal, Raul Garcia and Brand concluded the scoring with goals within 37 seconds. Noah MacPherson and Ryan DeLaHunt received assists on Garcia’s goal with 12:25 to play while Barrett and Garcia set up Brand with 11:48 to go.

     Cody Brumbaugh finished with 17 saves as the Panthers held a 43-18 advantage in shots.

     The loss dropped W-DC to 0-2 in the conference and 2-4 overall.

Panthers blank LOW

     Kennedy and Stewart scored two goals apiece and Brumbaugh stopped all 21 shots he faced as the Panthers blanked Lake of the Woods.

     MacPherson scored on assists from Brand and Dylan Weaver just 1:51 into the game before a pair of goals by Kennedy pushed the lead to 3-0 after the first period. Luke Jaeger and Bade set up Kennedy’s first goal at the 10:51 mark while Bade and Miller had assists on Kennedy’s second goal at the 15:22 mark.

     Stewart scored at the 2:51 and 6:23 marks of the second period to give the Panthers a 5-0 lead. Bailey Mueller and Koebernick assisted on the first goal while Bade and Miller had assists on the second goal.

     The Panthers finished with a 41-21 advantage in shots. Park Rapids improved to 3-1 against section opponents while LOW fell to 1-2 in section play and 1-7 overall.
