Panthers rout Storm, edge Bears

     Two goals apiece by Mady Vaudrin and Jessie O’Hern and Christina Smith’s two assists led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team to a second shutout over Morris/Benson this season.

     Vaudrin scored both her goals during a six-goal second period that sparked the Panthers’ 8-0 win over Morris/Benson Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena. Park Rapids shut out the Storm 9-0 in the season opener.

     Alex Pederson scored the game-winner Saturday afternoon as the Panthers edged Eveleth-Gilbert 2-1.

     Those two wins gave the Panthers a 4-5-1 record this season.

Panthers dominate Storm

     The Panthers used a 58-11 advantage in shots to spark the win over Morris/Benson.

     Abby Fischer and Smith assisted on O’Hern’s first goal at the 2:57 mark as the Panthers led 1-0 after the first period.

     Park Rapids exploded for six goals in the second period to take control. Emma Gribbin scored at the 1:04 mark, Pederson set up Fischer at the 1:48 mark and Vaudrin scored at the 5:18 mark to push the lead to 4-0. Short-handed goals by O’Hern at the 7:54 mark and Pederson at the 9:22 mark and another goal by Vaudrin at the 11:32 mark gave the Panthers a 7-1 advantage. Danika Aletto, Smith, Vaudrin and Gribbin had assists on the final three goals.

     Taylor Sagen scored the game’s final goal on an assist from Lexi Hinkley-Smith at the 6:28 mark.

     Goalie Shania Johnson made 11 saves for the Panthers.

Panthers edge Golden Bears

     Goals by Brooke Jerger and Pederson and 22 saves by Johnson led the Panthers past Eveleth-Gilbert.

     Kendra Dresow set up Jerger’s goal at the 8:07 mark of the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

     After Sam Mugge tied the game with a power-play goal at the 5:15 mark of the second period, Pederson scored the game-winner at the 9:19 mark of the third period on the power play.

     The Golden Bears finished with a 23-21 edge in shots.
