No. 4-rated Prowlers shut out Panthers

     Emily Bergland set up three goals and Sylvia Marolt scored two goals as Thief River Falls skated to a 5-0 win over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

     The Prowlers, who are rated No. 4 in this week’s state Class A poll, held a 63-11 advantage in shots on goal en route to their third shutout of the season. Thief River Falls has outscored its opponents 27-1 so far this season.

     Goalie Shania Johnson kept the Panthers in the game by making 58 saves, including 17 in the first period, 25 in the second period and 16 in the third period.

     Madison Poole scored at the 12:04 mark of the first period to give TRF a 1-0 lead before goals by Morgan Martell at the 10:30 mark and Kora Torkelson at the 14:14 mark pushed the lead to 3-0 after the second period. The Prowlers dominated the second period with a 27-1 advantage in shots. Marolt’s two goals in the third period, including a power-play goal at the 9:40 mark, concluded the scoring.

     The loss dropped Park Rapids to 2-3 on the season.

Fox leads Broncos past Panthers

     Hillary Fox scored four goals in leading International Falls to an 8-3 win over the Panthers last Tuesday night.

     After the Broncos took a 2-0 lead on goals by Fox and Amy Auran, Alex Pederson’s power-play goal pulled Park Rapids to within 2-1 after the first period.

     Fox completed her hat trick with a pair of goals, including one on the power play, in the second period and Amber Tilander scored to give International Falls a 5-1 lead.

     Jenna Anderson opened the third period with a goal to extend the lead to 6-1 before Pederson scored another power-play goal to make it 6-2. Fox followed with a power-play goal as the Broncos led 7-2. Jessie O’Hern’s goal with two minutes to play concluded the scoring for the Panthers.

     Goalie Taylor Fish made 17 saves as the Broncos improved to 2-1.
