Panthers open season with win on road, at home

Park Rapids’ Bailee Jerger (10) flipped the puck into the Northern Lakes zone during Thursday night’s game at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

  The Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team opened the season with a shutout win, a shutout loss and a win at home.

     Emma Gribbin and Alex Pederson scored two goals apiece and Shania Johnson made 14 saves as the Panthers opened the season with a 9-0 victory over Morris/Benson on Nov. 9.

     The Panthers were held to 11 shots on goal in a 7-0 loss at Warroad last Tuesday night.

     Mady Vaudrin and Kendra Dresow scored two goals apiece as the Panthers made their home debut with a 5-1 win over Northern Lakes Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Panthers blank Morris/Benson

     Seven different players scored goals and eight different players tallied assists as the Panthers opened the season with a decisive win.

     Lauren Naeve scored on an assist from Julia Renner, Lexi Hinkley-Smith scored on assists from Taylor Sagen and Kalpana Bowe, and Gribbin scored twice with assists going to Danika Aletto, Pederson and Vaudrin as the Panthers led 4-0 after the first period.

     Vaudrin and Gribbin tallied assists on goals by Pederson and Bailee Jerger in the second period to extend the lead to 6-0.

     Goals by Pederson, Sarena Aletto and Vaudrin concluded the scoring in the third period. Christina Smith and Danika Aletto had assists in the final period.

     The Panthers finished with a 30-14 advantage in shots.

Warroad shuts out Panthers

     Lynn Astrup’s hat trick and three assists apiece from Demi Gardner and Mariah Gardner led Warroad past the Panthers in a battle of Section 8A teams.

     Goals by Demi Gardner and Mariah Gardner gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead after the first period before goals by Shalese Snowdon, Cassie Pelland and Astrup made it 5-0 after the second period. Astrup completed her hat trick with a pair of goals in the third period as the state’s No. 1-ranked Class A team completed the shutout.

     Johnson made 34 saves as Warroad held a 41-11 edge in shots.

Panthers defeat Lightning

     Scoring three goals on eight shots in the second period sparked the Panthers past Northern Lakes in this Mid-State Conference game.

     Danika Aletto and Pederson set up Vaudrin on the opening face-off as the Panthers took a 1-0 lead just 10 seconds into the game.

     After Courtney Kittock scored 25 seconds into the second period to tie the game, Brooke Jerger assisted on a goal by Dresow 17 seconds later to produce what would be the game-winner. Vaudrin scored on an assist from Tayah Otterness at the 11:38 mark and Brooke Jerger set up Dresow at the 6:21 mark to give Park Rapids a 4-1 lead.

     Pederson and Otterness assisted on a goal by Gribbin with 2:11 to play to conclude the scoring.

     Johnson finished with 25 saves as the Panthers held a 29-26 edge in shots on goal. The Lightning fell to 0-2 on the season.
