     The Park Rapids girls tennis team opened the Section 8A tournament with a convincing 7-0 win over Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday at the Depot Courts.

     Park Rapids, the No. 2 seed, won all seven matches in straight sets in coasting to a quarterfinal victory over the No. 7-seeded Wolverines.

     Christina Smith, Julia Smith, Hope Johnson and Mariena Dearstyne combined to lose only seven games in sweeping the four singles matches.

     The Julia Renner/Charity Ridlon, Sarena Kinkel/Lindsey Girtz and Ali Walsh/Morgan Knott doubles teams combined to drop only nine games as the Panthers improved to 15-1 in dual meets this season. Park Rapids was rated No. 9 in the final regular-season state Class A poll.

     In Tuesday’s other quarterfinal matches, No. 1 Staples-Motley blanked No. 8 Perham 7-0, No. 4 Crookston defeated No. 5 Roseau 5-2 and No. 3 Pequot Lakes blanked No. 6 East Grand Forks 7-0.

No. 2 doubles: Sarena Kinkel/Lindsey Girtz, PR, over Abby Wegscheid/Sarah Moen 6-2, 6-2.

No. 3 doubles: Ali Walsh/Morgan Knott, PR, over Anna Kraemer/Gabby Weiher 6-2, 6-2.
