Cardinals hand Panthers first dual loss of season

     Close wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles helped Staples-Motley hand the Park Rapids girls tennis team its first dual-meet loss of the season Tuesday.

     Mikayla Wing prevailed in three sets at No. 1 singles while Emily Israelson and Grace Wolhowe prevailed in three sets at No. 2 doubles to spark the Cardinals to a 4-3 Mid-State Conference win at Staples. Staples-Motley added straight set wins at No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles. The Cardinals are rated No. 7 in this week’s state Class A poll.

     Julia Renner won a close match at No. 2 singles, Julia Smith coasted to a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, and Ali Walsh and Mariena Dearstyne prevailed in a marathon match at No. 3 doubles to account for the Panthers’ three wins.

     Park Rapids, which is rated No. 9 in this week’s state poll, fell to 3-1 in conference matches and 7-1 overall this season.

No. 1 singles: Mikayla Wing, SM, over Christina Smith 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

No. 2 singles: Julia Renner, PR, over Sarah Koopmann 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

No. 3 singles: Julia Smith, PR, over Kaleigh Hosier 6-1, 6-3.

No. 4 singles: Lexi Johnson, SM, over Kellsey Clark 7-5, 6-3.

No. 1 doubles: Kelsey Zetah/Nikki Edin, SM, over Lindsey Girtz/Sarena Kinkel 6-0, 6-4.

No. 2 doubles: Emily Israelson/Grace Wolhowe, SM, over Charity Ridlon/Hope Johnson 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

No. 3 doubles: Ali Walsh/Mariena Dearstyne, PR, over Christina Smith/Lauren Nelson 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
