'Spirited' fisherfolk compete in Menahga's annual derby

Several anglers won prizes at the annual Menahga Family Fishing Derby on Spirit Lake Saturday.

Two separate categories were awarded prizes for the top 10 largest fish. Category one was northern pike, walleye or bass. Category two was pan fish such as crappie or perch.

In category one, first place went to Charles Edwards for his 3-pound, 13-ounce northern. He won a one-man flip-over fishing shelter. Second place went to Kasey Tyge, who won $75 with a 1-pound, 4-ounce bass. Third place went to Art Yliniemi, who won $50 for his 1-pound, 2-ounce northern and $500 for the third overall largest fish. Fourth place went to Don Weyer, who won $25 for his 1-pound northern, and fifth place went to Katrina Johnson, who won $25 for a 12-ounce northern.

The rest of the winners for category one were drawn. Those who won $25 were Jason Orlando, Larry Salo, Reid Johnson, Gerald Kendall and Stan Myllykangas.

In category two, first place went to Harv Burkman for his 6.9-ounce crappie. He won a one-man flip-over fishing shelter. Second place went to Mary Hansen, who won $75 for a 6.8-ounce crappie. Third place went to Lorlie Harrington who took home $50 for a 5.8-ounce perch.

Fourth through 10th places won $25. Fourth place went to JR Fransen with a 5.7-ounce crappie. Fifth place went to Bobby Lusti with a 5.3-ounce crappie. Sixth place went to Holly Paurus with a 5.3-ounce crappie. Seventh place went to Brandon Butler with a 5.3-ounce perch. Eighth place went to Nick Peterson with a 4.9-ounce perch. Ninth place went to Russ Knowles with a 4.6-ounce perch. Tenth place went to Nona Hanson with a 4.3-ounce crappie.

Nathan Carlson of East Gull Lake won the 2007 Polaris Hawkeye 300 ATV.

Don Koski of Menahga won the 5- by 8-foot trailer with ramp.

Tom Glander of Perham won the StrikeMaster Mag 2000 gas ice auger.

The "early bird" prize, awarded to one person who purchased a derby ticket prior to Jan. 19, went to Pat Thomas of Moorhead. He won a one-man flip-over fishing shelter.

The $1 raffle for the four-day, three-night Canadian fishing trip to Barker Bay Resort and Outposts went to Johnny Johnson of Osage.

In the raffle drawing, Karen Klicker and Marshall Kostka won $100; Steve Monroe, Leo Tomperi, Zach Jewison and Tony Windschitl won $50; John Rogahn, Greg Miller, Dennis Daily and Craig Shore won $25.
