Panthers held to two goals in three tournament games

Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and West Fargo combined to hold the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to only two goals in three games during the Fergus Falls Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-29 at the Fergus Falls Community Arena.

Fergus Falls used a 32-13 advantage in shots to spark a 4-0 victory in the tournament opener on Dec. 27 while Detroit Lakes used a 33-14 advantage in shots to spark a 2-0 victory on Dec. 28. Park Rapids held a 2-1 lead before West Fargo rallied for a 4-2 victory in the tournament finale on Dec. 29.

First-period goals by Jakob Brimhall and Nate Longtin and second-period goals by Brimhall and Hayden Shol led Fergus Falls past Park Rapids in the opener. Park Rapids goalie Austin Jerger finished with 28 saves.

Ben Unruh scored 11 seconds into the game and Jace Kovash added the final goal at the 15:25 mark of the first period in leading Detroit Lakes past the Panthers as Jerger finished with 31 saves. Detroit Lakes edged the Panthers 4-3 on Dec. 12.

In the finale, Devin Wolf scored 1:58 into the game to give West Fargo a 1-0 advantage after the first period before Thomas Melvin scored back-to-back goals to give the Panthers a 2-1 edge in the second period. Carter Opheim and Bjorn Jorgenson assisted on Melvin's game-tying goal at the 1:34 mark before Melvin scored the go-ahead goal at the 8:18 mark. Goals by Tanner Nelson and Brayeden Jacobson within a span of 2:08 gave West Fargo a 3-2 lead entering the third period before Nelson's goal at the 13:32 mark sealed the win. Park Rapids outshot the Packers 35-31 as goalie Brendan Kruchowski made 27 saves.

The Panthers fell to 3-8 on the season while Fergus Falls improved to 5-4-3, Detroit Lakes improved to 4-6-1 and West Fargo improved to 3-8.
