Gymnasts' consistent performances continue

Head coach James Sanchez has been satisfied with the progress of the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team.

The Panthers turned in another consistent effort in a 131.20-117.40 loss to Detroit Lakes’ JV team Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

“The girls were looking to overcome their mishaps and get back on track. I thought they rose to the occasion and performed well,” said Sanchez, whose team has a 117.71 average in the last five meets. “Their goal is to prepare for sections and they’re working hard and progressing. We’re a young team and the younger girls are stepping up. The girls are here to compete.”

Park Rapids opened with a 29.00 in floor exercise with Katie Eischens’ 7.70, Morgan Koppelman’s 7.60, Olivia Ulvin’s 7.30 and Natalie Backmann’s 6.40 comprising the team score. Alex Kirlin added a 6.20. Detroit Lakes’ Jordan Ehnert took first with an 8.70.

On balance beam, Erin Tooker’s runner-up 8.325 led the Panthers to a 29.85. Koppelman’s 7.60, Backmann’s 6.975 and Ulvin’s 6.95 rounded out the team score while Kirlin added a 6.85. DL’s Jerzie Horner led the way with an 8.575.

The Panthers received a 27.20 on uneven parallel bars with Tooker’s 7.25, Koppelman’s 7.00, Eischens’ 6.95 and Backmann’s 6.00 leading the way. Horner took first with an 8.60.

In vault, Erin Tooker’s 8.15, Brianna Nelson’s 8.05, Backmann’s 7.65 and a pair of 7.50s by Koppelman and Val Tooker led to a 31.35. DL’s Anneka Lindstrom had the top score with an 8.25.

The Lakers’ JV team posted scores of 33.25 in floor, 31.925 on beam, 33.45 on bars and 32.575 in vault in defeating Park Rapids for the third time this season. DL posted wins of 130.95-110.50 and 127.25-119.55 against the Panthers earlier this season.

Horner claimed the all-around title with a 33.775 while Koppelman was third with a 29.70 and Backmann was fourth with a 27.025 as the Panthers fell to 0-6 in dual meets. Park Rapids turned in another solid team effort while competing without all-arounder Halle Landstrom.

The Panthers posted their second highest team score of the season in a 128.90-117.55 loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville at Long Prairie on Jan. 26.

Park Rapids’ top event was vault where Landstrom’s 8.40, a pair of 8.30s by Erin Tooker and Nelson, and a 7.95 by Backmann led to a 32.95. LPGE’s Tristen Marcyes had the top score with an 8.90.

In floor, Landstrom’s 8.20, Ulvin’s 7.20, Koppelman’s 6.80 and Kirlin’s 6.75 resulted in a 28.95. Reanne Warwick’s 8.95 topped the field.

Erin Tooker’s 8.35, Landstrom’s 7.35, Koppelman’s 6.65 and Kirlin’s 6.20 gave the Panthers a 28.55 on beam. Warwick took first with an 8.60.

The Panthers received a 27.10 on bars with Erin Tooker’s 7.25, Koppelman’s 7.00, Landstrom’s 6.75 and Eischens’ 6.10 producing a 27.10. Warwick again led the pack with an 8.00.

Warwick claimed the all-around title with a 34.15 as LPGE/B tallied scores of 34.40 in vault, 33.35 in floor, 31.00 on bars and 30.15 on beam. Landstrom was third in all-around with a 30.70 while Koppelman took fifth with a 28.25 as the Panthers missed matching their high of 119.55.
