Gymnasts hit season highs in home debut

James Sanchez continues to see improvement from the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team.

The Panthers used season highs in three events to finish third at Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational with a 111.85. Alexandria claimed the team title with a 135.35 while Long Prairie-Grey Eagle followed with a 128.90. Morris Area was fourth with a 110.75.

Park Rapids opened with a 29.45 in vault behind Grace Litzau's 7.50, Halle Landstrom's 7.40, Morgan Koppelman's 7.35 and Brianna Nelson's 7.20. Natalie Backmann added a 6.80. Alexandria's Joslyn Kent took first with a 9.00.

On uneven parallel bars, Koppelman's 6.95, Erin Tooker's 6.60, Landstrom's 6.10 and Litzau's 5.60 led to a season-high 25.25 team score. Backmann had a 4.85 while Alexandria's Rachel Boyden led the field with an 8.50.

Tooker's 7.90, Koppelman's 6.90, Backmann's 6.40, Alex Kirlin's 6.20 and Landstrom's 6.05 led the Panthers to a season-high 27.25 on balance beam. LP-GE's Tristen Marcyes received an 8.90 for first place.

Park Rapids ended the meet on floor exercise where Koppelman's 7.90, Landstrom's 7.70, Litzau's 7.30 and Kirlin's 7.00 resulted in a season best of 29.90. Olivia Ulvin rounded out the Panthers' floor team with a 6.50. Alexandria's Sydney Gray took first with a 9.40.

Gray won the all-around title with a 34.70. Koppelman was ninth with a 29.10 while Landstrom finished 11th with a 27.25.

Alexandria had the top scores in all four events with a 35.45 in vault, a 35.40 in floor, a 33.10 on beam and a 31.40 on bars.

"The meet had a good flow and went well. The younger girls were super nervous at the start, but they did awesome," said Sanchez. "The girls continue to improve. We had a lot of personal bests. We started off a little slow, but the girls bounced back and finished strong. It was a good meet."

Team scores: Alexandria 135.35, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 128.90, Park Rapids 111.85, Morris Area 110.75.
