Braves open season with impressive win

Leah Schwartz's 12 digs and 10 kills and Aimee Lake's 12 digs and four ace serves powered the Menahga volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-10, 25-20 victory over Browerville/Eagle Valley in the season opener Thursday night at Menahga.

In Set 1, a kill by Tara Hendrickson, an ace serve by Madi Marjamaa, two kills by Schwartz, a kill by Cierra Ahlf and a tip by Marjamaa gave the Braves a 9-5 lead. After Browerville tied the set at 11-11, kills by Schwartz and Hendrickson and an ace serve by Jessica Pietila made it 15-12 before two kills by Schwartz and a kill by Aimee Lake closed out the set.

Ahlf and Aimee Lake served Menahga past the Tigers in Set 2. After kills by Hendrickson and Annie Lake and a tip by Aimee Lake produced a 5-4 advantage, Ahlf served an ace and seven straight points to push the lead to 12-4. Marjamaa had a winning tip and Aimee Lake had a kill during that run. Aimee Lake followed with three aces and seven consecutive points to extend the advantage to 20-6. Marjamaa's tip and a kill by Hendrickson helped spark that run. Kills by Schwartz, Ahlf and Annie Lake closed out that set.

Schwartz and Jessica Pietila combined for 10 service points as the Braves rallied in Set 3 to close out the match. Browerville jumped out to a 4-0 lead before an ace serve by Schwartz and an ace block by Ahlf cut the gap to 8-7. A tip by Aimee Lake, a kill by Ahlf, a block by Hendrickson and a kill by Schwartz kept Menahga within 17-14. Pietila served six straight points as two kills by Schwartz and kills by Ahlf and Annie Lake gave Menahga a 21-17 advantage. A tip by Marjamaa closed out the match as Menahga prevailed.

Marjamaa finished with 24 set assists and had five kills and nine digs as the Braves pounded down 32 kills in the match. Hendrickson added five kills while Annie Lake and Pietila combined for 13 digs.
