Panthers, Tigers earn home playoff games

Park Rapids and Nevis earned home-court advantage to open the section boys basketball tournament.

Park Rapids received the No. 4 seed in the South for the Section 8AA playoffs with a 12-12 record and will host No. 5 Wadena-Deer Creek (13-13) Thursday night (March 8) at 7 p.m. The Panthers defeated W-DC 60-49 Dec. 21 at Wadena.

The winner of that game plays the winner between Hawley (the No. 1 seed in the North with a 13-11 record) and Thief River Falls (the No. 8 seed in the North with a 2-24 record) at Concordia College in Moorhead on March 10 at 6 p.m.

In Thursday night's other first-round games, Perham (the No. 1 seed in the South with a 26-0 record) hosts Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (the No. 8 seed in the South with a 7-17 record), East Grand Forks (the No. 4 seed in the North with a 15-11 record) hosts No. 5 Bagley (the No. 5 seed in the North with a 13-12 record), Roseau (the No. 2 seed in the North with a 17-9 record) hosts No. 7 Warroad (the No. 7 seed in the North with a 12-13 record), Osakis (the No. 3 seed in the South with a 20-6 record) hosts Barnesville (the No. 6 seed in the South with a 9-15 record), Breckenridge (the No. 2 seed in the South with a 21-5 record) hosts Staples-Motley (the No. 7 seed in the South with a 9-15 record), and Crookston (the No. 3 seed in the North with a 13-13 record) hosts Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (the No. 6 seed in the North with an 8-18 record).

Concordia will host all four quarterfinal games on March 10.

The Section 5A North tournament is scheduled to begin Monday night (March 5) with No. 6 Pine River-Backus (14-12) hosting No. 11 Laprote (5-22), No. 7 Verndale (10-15) hosting No. 10 Menahga (8-17) and No. 8 Bertha-Hewitt (10-14) hosting No. 9 McGregor (9-17).

The tournament continues Thursday night (March 8) with No 2 Nevis (21-5) hosting the Verndale vs. Menahga winner at 7 p.m. The other North quarterfinal games pit No. 1 Cromwell-Wright (20-6) hosting the B-H vs. McGregor winner, No. 4 Browerville-Eagle Valley (14-11) hosting No. 5 Sebeka (13-12) and No. 3 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (16-10) hosting the PR-B vs. Laporte winner.

Sites will be determined for the next round on March 10 and for the Section 5A championship game on March 16.

Hinckley-Finlayson (22-4) and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (10-16) are the top seeds in the South half.
