Rebels connect from long distance to defeat Panthers

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton connected on 10 3-pointers in building a 23-point lead before going on a 17-4 run to seal an 81-55 victory over the Park Rapids girls basketball team Monday night at the Area High School gym.

The Rebels made 13 3-pointers in the game to improve to 10-0 against Section 8AA opponents and 17-1 overall. D-G-F is rated No. 2 in the latest state Class AA poll.

Park Rapids jumped out to an 8-4 lead as a layup by Rilee Michaelson, jumpers by Kaisa Coborn and Jaiden McCollum, and two free throws by Coborn produced an early  lead with 15:29 to play in the first half.

A jumper by Grace Steichen, a 3-pointer by Katlyn Brenna and a layup by Natalie Steichen gave the Rebels an 11-8 advantage at the 14:20 mark before a layup by Paige Johnson, a layup off a steal by McCollum and a basket off a rebound by Olivia McDonald helped Park Rapids tie the game at 14-14 at the 11:30 mark.

Ally Freier hit a 3-pointer with 11:07 to play in the first half to give D-G-F the lead for good. Natalie Steichen, Allie Critchley and Brenna connected on 3-pointers and Grace Steichen scored on a pair of layups before two 3-pointers by Rae Critchley ended a 25-5 run that extended the Rebels’ lead to 39-19 with 2:29 remaining in the opening half. A jumper by Coborn was offset by a jumper by Natalie Steichen as the Rebels carried a 41-22 lead into the intermission.

Two more 3-pointers by Rae Critchley gave D-G-F a 49-26 lead with 16:18 remaining before a 3-pointer by Kaisa Coborn, two baskets apiece by Michaelson and McCollum, and a 3-pointer by Kendra Coborn cut the gap to 52-41 with 11:43 left.

After Rae Critchley and Allie Critchley hit 3-pointers to give D-G-F a 60-41 advantage at the 9:20 mark, a jumper by Michaelson, a layup by Kendra Coborn, a basket off a rebound by McDonald and two layups by Kaisa Coborn pulled the Panthers to within 64-51 with 6:16 to play.

But the Rebels countered with an 11-0 run as Allie Critchley’s 3-pointer made it 75-51 with 2:55 remaining. Michaelson scored on a jumper and layup before two jumpers by D-G-F’s Maria Watt concluded the scoring.

Natalie Steichen (20), Brenna (16) and Rae Critchley (15) hit double figures to lead the Rebels.

Michaelson’s 18 points, McCollum’s 11 points and Kasia Coborn’s 10 points led the Panthers, who fell to 4-3 against section teams and 11-6 overall.
