Panthers' defense sparks win over Nevis

A 16-5 run to start the game and a 19-2 run to open the second half sparked the Park Rapids girls basketball team to a 60-23 win over Nevis Thursday night at the Tiger Arena.

A layup by Jaiden McCollum, a layup off a steal by Kaisa Coborn, a layup by Paige Johnson, two jumpers by McCollum, jumpers by Coborn and Rilee Michaelson, and a layup by Julia Johnson gave the Panthers a 16-5 lead with 11:01 to play in the first half. Tori Carrier hit a 3-pointer and Annalise Ahrendt hit a jumper for Nevis in the early going.

Madison Neyens' layup and another 3-pointer by Carrier made it 16-10 at the 10:16 mark before the Panthers used a jumper by Michaelson, a layup by McCollum, a 3-pointer by Kendra Coborn, a basket off a rebound by Michaelson, a jumper by Olivia McDonald and another 3-pointer by Kaisa Coborn to push the lead to 32-12 with 3:02 left in the first half.

Kia Heide's layup and a 3-pointer by Kali Oelschlager were offset by a layup by McDonald and a jumper by Whitney Steffel as Park Rapids carried a 36-17 advantage into the break.

The Panthers extended the lead to 46-17 with 14:22 to go behind layups by Paige Johnson and Kaisa Coborn, two layups by Kendra Coborn and a layup by McCollum. After Ava Isaacson scored off a rebound, Park Rapids used a basket off a rebound by McDonald, a 3-pointer by Michaelson, and jumpers by Julia Johnson and Paige Johnson to build a 55-19 advantage with 10:22 to play.

Katie Kamphaus scored inside and Isaacson hit a jumper to conclude the scoring for Nevis while Steffel hit a jumper for the Panthers down the stretch.

Michaelson's 11 points and five rebounds and McCollum's 10 points, five rebounds and four steals led the Panthers. Kendra Coborn had five assists, Kaisa Coborn had four assists and Paige Johnson had five rebounds and six steals as Park Rapids improved to 11-5.

Isaacson and Carrier combined for 12 points for the Tigers, who fell to 5-11 on the season.

Patriots hand Panthers first conference loss

Karli Skog's 22 points from the perimeter and Olivia Lane's 19 points and 16 rebounds on the interior led Pequot Lakes to a 74-62 win over the Panthers in a battle of the top teams in the Mid-State Conference at Pequot Lakes on Jan. 23.

Erika Lane added 14 points for the Patriots, who hit 10 of 21 3-pointers and 18 of 20 free throws to improve to 4-0 in the conference and 8-8 overall.

Kaisa Coborn's 19 points, four assists and three steals, Michaelson's 15 points and five rebounds, Kendra Coborn's 12 points and four assists, and Paige Johnson's 10 points, five rebounds and three steals led the Panthers, who fell to 7-1 in the conference.

"The girls played well. At the end their shots went in and ours didn't," said Park Rapids head coach Jeff Overmyer. "We took a gamble and tried to contain Olivia Lane on the inside and make their other players beat us. We did a pretty good job on Lane, but they were able to drain some 3s and hit their free throws."
