Defense sparks Tigers past Hinckley-Finlayson

Kia Heide's 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists sparked the Nevis girls basketball team to a 42-29 victory over Hinckley-Finlayson Friday night at the Tiger Arena.

Ava Isaacson (9) and Tori Carrier (9) combined for 18 points with Isaacson leading the Tigers with 12 rebounds. Kali Oelschlager hauled down seven rebounds and Ashley Pyburn had five assists and three steals for the Tigers, who led 12-7 at the half. Madison Neyens also had three steals as Nevis improved to 2-4 against Section 5A teams and 5-10 overall.

Hinckley-Finlayson fell to 0-8 against section opponents and 0-15 overall.

"We struggled on offense in the first half. Luckily our defense played outstanding and we rebounded the ball extremely well. We've been working on rebounding pretty hard lately and the girls have responded nicely," said Nevis head coach Bradley Neyens. "We started being a little more patient on offense in the second half and it paid off for us. We hit some big shots towards the end of the game and we came out on top."

Mustangs top Tigers

Heide's 22 points and Isaacson's 10 rebounds led the Tigers in a 63-45 Northwoods Conference loss to Kelliher-Northome Jan. 16 at Kelliher.

Katie Kamphaus hauled down eight rebounds while Pyburn and Cole Mastley had six rebounds apiece. Pyburn also had five steals while Isaacson and Heide had two assists and three steals each as Nevis fell to 3-6 in the conference.

The Mustangs, who led 31-18 at the half, improved to 4-2 in the conference and 12-5 overall.

"We struggled rebounding the basketball. They are a good rebounding team, but we just did not win the battles on the glass," said Neyens. "We did do some positive things. We are starting to take better care of the basketball and we are getting to the rim driving the ball. We have plenty to work on, but we are getting better as the season goes on."
