Panthers pick up pace in 91-73 win over Frazee

A 14-0 run midway through the first half sparked a 33-13 run as the Park Rapids boys basketball team built a 55-33 halftime lead in running away with a 91-73 victory over Frazee Saturday afternoon at the Area High School gym.

Park Rapids, which had averaged 45 points a game entering this contest, used a layup and 3-pointer by Tristin Persons, a layup off a steal and 3-pointer by Gabe Bagstad, a basket off a rebound by Preston Renneberg, a three-point play by Jake Reish, and jumpers by Jason Haas and Reish for a 22-20 lead with 8:42 to play in the first half.

Jumpers by Jeff Haas and Jason Haas, layups off steals by Bagstad and Persons, two more jumpers by Jason Haas and another layup by Persons pushed the lead to 36-20 at the 5:25 mark. Three-pointers by Blake Johnson, Bagstad and Luke Kosel and a pair of jumpers by Shawn Ohm gave the Panthers a 55-33 lead at the break.

Frazee opened the second half with an 8-0 run behind a basket off a rebound by Reid Eckert, a jumper by Vincent Helmer and two layups by Broden Fleisher to cut the gap to 55-41 with 15:16 to go before the Panthers responded with a 19-6 spurt to regain control. Jason Haas scored off a rebound, Bagstad hit back-to-back 3-pointers, Reish converted a three-point play off a rebound, and Bagstad followed a layup off a steal with a jumper for a 74-47 advantage with 8:42 remaining.

Reish scored off a rebound and Bagstad scored on a layup for a 78-50 lead before a layup by Reish, a jumper and 3-pointer by Bagstad, a 3-pointer by Johnson and a jumper by Will Pickar sealed the win.

Bagstad hit five 3-pointers and finished with 31 points while Jason Haas (14), Reish (13) and Persons (11) also hit double figures as the Panthers easily surpassed their previous high of 54 points. The win snapped a three-game losing streak as the Panthers evened their record at 3-3.

Jack Courneya scored 23 points while Fleisher and Eckert added 14 points apiece for the Hornets, who fell to 0-5. Frazee has allowed an average of 83.4 points a game so far this season.

Winand leads Pirates to win over Panthers

Carter Winand scored 30 points in leading Crookston to a 69-48 win over the Panthers Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

Crookston jumped out to a 12-5 lead and used another 12-5 run to claim a 31-19 lead at the break. The Pirates opened the second half with an 11-3 run to build a 42-22 advantage en route to the win in this game between Section 8AA teams.

Todd Boerger added 14 points while Nick Garmen pulled down 10 rebounds as the Pirates improved to 3-1 in section play and overall.

Persons scored 20 points, Jason Haas had 11 points and Bagstad scored 10 points for the Panthers in their first section game.

Balanced Patriots defeat Panthers

Thirteen players entered the scoring column in leading Pequot Lakes to a 64-38 Mid-State Conference win over the Panthers at Pequot Lakes on Dec. 12.

Zach Sjoblad scored 17 points while Chase Larson (8), Dylan Ackerman (8) and Vincent Miska (8) combined for 24 points to lead the Patriots, who led 22-14 at the half.

Persons led the Panthers with 25 points while Bagstad chipped in 11 points.

The win lifted the Patriots to 1-0 in the conference and 2-0 overall while Park Rapids fell to 1-2 in conference play.
