Nevis girls drop conference openers

Turnovers proved costly as the Nevis girls basketball team dropped games to Red Lake, Cass Lake and Clearbrook-Gonvick.

The Tigers turned the ball over 41 times in a 66-42 loss to Red Lake Dec. 5 at the Tiger Arena. Katie Kamphaus' 16 points and 11 rebounds and Tori Carrier's 12 points led Nevis. Ashley Pyburn pulled down seven rebounds and Annalise Ahrendt had three steals for the Tigers.

"I was impressed with the way our girls played. Red Lake is tough. They like to run and gun and we were able to hold them to 66 points," said Nevis head coach Brad Neyens. "We missed too many scoring opportunities and turned the ball over too many times in the first half. We are improving every game and it's fun to watch."

Kamphaus had another double-double with 11 points and 21 rebounds in Nevis' 59-46 loss at Cass Lake in the Northwoods Conference opener Thursday night. Carrier scored 16 points and had seven steals in that game as the Tigers had 25 turnovers.

"We had a game plan going into this game and executed it, but we didn't make our shots," said Neyens. "We turned it over less and played solid defensively, but shooting 22 percent from the field is not going to win us very many games. We missed too many shots right underneath the basket. We played tough and got close in the second half, but just couldn't close them out."

Kamphaus' 13 points and nine rebounds and Kia Heide's 10 points led Nevis in a 47-31 loss to Clearbrook-Gonvick Friday night at the Tiger Arena in another conference game. Ava Isaacson had eight rebounds while Heide and Carrier had three steals apiece in that game, which saw Nevis turn the ball over 26 times.

"We just didn't play well in the first half. We have to rebound the ball better and make better passes. I got after my girls at halftime, made some adjustments and they responded terrifically. Our girls came out thirsty in the second half. Our defense was playing great and we were holding them to one shot. We also moved the ball well. We just couldn't do anything once they started stalling with 10 minutes to go," said Neyens. "I'm proud of the way the girls played. The girls are really starting to see some results of the hard work they put in during the offseason and practice. We will keep working hard at practice and correct some things. I think we will surprise some teams moving forward."

Nevis fell to 2-2 in the conference and 2-3 overall. Red Lake is now 4-0, Cass Lake improved to 1-2 in the conference and 1-4 overall and C-G improved to 2-0 in conference play and 4-0 overall.
