Northwoods Triathlon registration opens Wednesday

Looking for a fitness goal for a New Year's resolution in 2013?

Registration for Nevis' 11th annual Northwoods Triathlon opens at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2.

This year's event will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, setting off from the shores of Lake Belle Taine.

Triathlon registration closes quickly, sometimes within just a few hours, due to it being part of the Tri Minnesota Racing Series. Interested athletes are encouraged to register first thing Wednesday morning.

Registrations will be taken online only at ties.aspx?eventid=2815. Cost is $60 per individual, $100 for teams. Info required: names, birthdates and T-shirt sizes.

The event has been expanded to 300 individuals and 50 teams (men, women or mixed) in the swimming, biking and running competition.

The quarter-mile swim (wetsuits permitted) begins and ends at the city beach on Lake Belle Taine. Bikers (helmets required) head off over hill and dale on paved roads for a 14-mile ride. Then runners set off on the Heartland Trail for a 5K sprint.

All participants receive a medallion, T-shirt and refreshments.

Check-in begins at 6 a.m. with a pre-race meeting at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m.

Kids races will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Muskie.

Awards for individuals will be presented to the top three males, top three females and top three males and females in each age group.

Age categories are 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70-plus (males and females).

Relay awards will be presented to the first overall male, female and coed teams.

Race substitutions will be allowed up until June 30; race directors must be notified of the change.

Course record in women's is held by Michelle Andres of Brainerd who finished with a time of 1:05:48 in 2008. Brooks Grossinger of Moorhead holds the men's distinction with 58:05 registering on the clock in 2012.

The Nevis-Park Rapids female team of Jean Greseth, Leah Walters and Dawn Pappas hold the course record with 1:17:33, also achieved in 2008. The male team of Tom Caprio, Kevin Scheiterlein and Sam Renneberg hold the course record with a time of 56:29 from 2007. The co-ed team of Tara Noer, Mike Noer and David Brandt hold the course record with a time of 1:02:35 from 2003.

A pre-race spaghetti dinner will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 at Nevis School, where packets may be picked up the night before the race.

The Northwoods Triathlon is sponsored by Nevis Civic and Commerce, with proceeds used to support the health and wellness of residents in the surrounding community. 

The triathlon is part of the Tri Minnesota Racing Series. All participants are automatically entered in the series.
