Wrestlers' win over Deer River leads to fourth place at tournament

The Park Rapids wrestling team used a victory over Deer River to finish fourth at Saturday's Park Rapids Invitational.

Park Rapids opened with a 51-18 win over Deer River before dropping matches to Lisbon (51-24) and Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena (44-30) at the Century School gym.

Lisbon won the team title in this six-team tournament with wins over Deer River (67-6) and Park Rapids in pool play and a 49-27 win over Hibbing in the title match. Hibbing advanced to the finals with wins over Wadena-Deer Creek (60-20) and BCLB (42-36) while W-DC defeated Deer River 42-30 for fifth place.

In the win over Deer River, the Panthers jumped out to a 33-0 lead behind pins by Tanner Eischens at 106 pounds and Nolan Booge at 120 and forfeit wins by Zach Nelson at 126, Ben Baumgartner at 138 and Justin Dravis at 145. Jared Sunram also had a 7-3 minor decision at 113. Chris Shaw received a forfeit win at 195 while Trai Schmidt and Chris Baxter ended the match with pins.

Eischens' 11-5 win at 106, Sunram's pin at 113, Booge's pin at 126, Baumgartner's forfeit win at 138 and Dravis' 10-7 decision at 145 gave the Panthers a 24-12 lead in the second match before Lisbon rallied by winning the final seven matches, including three by forfeit.

In the third-place match, the Panthers led 24-11 before three forfeits and two pins rallied BCLB to the win. Sunram posted a 9-0 major decision at 113 and Booge followed with a 12-0 major decision at 120 to give Park Rapids an 8-5 lead. Nelson's forfeit win at 132, Baumgartner's 19-6 major decision at 138 and Dravis' pin at 145 gave the Panthers a 24-11 lead. BCLB won the next five matches to build a 41-24 advantage before Schmidt received a forfeit win at 220 as the Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season.
