Johnson makes 80 saves in loss

Park Rapids goalie Shania Johnson reached to poke the puck away from Warroad's Kayla Gardner during Tuesday night's game.

Shania Johnson was impressive in the nets despite a loss by the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team Tuesday night.

Johnson set a school record by making 80 saves against the top-rated Class A team in the state as Warroad used an 89-9 advantage in shots on goal to defeat the Panthers 9-0 at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

After a goal by Mariah Gardner just 1:47 into the game, two goals by Kim Schaible and a goal by Lisa Marvin gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead after the first period. Warroad held a 35-4 advantage in shots in the first period.

Kayla Gardner had a shorthanded goal and power-play goal midway through the second period and Schaible completed her hat trick with 22 seconds remaining as the Warriors increased their lead to 7-0. Warroad had a 39-3 edge in shots in that period.

Goals by Demi Gardner and Lynn Astrup completed the scoring in the third period as the Warriors held a 15-2 advantage in shots in the final period to cap off the win in their season debut.

Marvin finished with five assists while Kayla Gardner had two goals nd three assists. Astrup and Sierra Hanowski had three assists each and goalie Dayton Hilgert made nine saves for the win.

Park Rapids fell to 1-1 on the season.
