Hein's 4 TDs lift Perham by Panthers

Jordan Hein showed Friday night why several NCAA Division I colleges are recruiting the Perham senior quarterback.

Hein rushed for 98 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 183 yards and another score in leading the Yellowjackets to a 34-12 Heart O'Lakes Conference Northern Division victory over Park Rapids.

"The kids played well and hung in there," said Park Rapids head coach Aaron Morris. "The kids showed improvement from last week to this week. That's what you want to see as a coach. Hopefully things will keep going that way."

Perham controlled most of the first quarter, but faced a 6-0 deficit.

After punting on their first possession, the Yellowjackets' Josh Nordick intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards to the Perham 48.

A 23-yard pass from Hein to Eric Brauch and a 21-yard pass from Hein to Nordick led Perham to the Park Rapids 8, but that drive stalled.

After each team was forced to punt, the Panthers put together a six-play, 74-yard drive to open the scoring. Cory Gartner's 12-yard run was followed by a 59-yard pass from Tyler McCollum to Zach Eystad as Park Rapids took a 6-0 lead with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter.

The Yellowjackets used a 34-yard pass from Hein to Payton Jordahl and a 15-yard pass interference penalty to reach the Park Rapids 15. Two plays later, Rilee Johnson recovered a fumble at the 8 to end that drive.

An 8-yard run by Eystad and a 17-yard pass from McCollum to Cory Gartner helped the Panthers move to the 33, but Kyle Sonnenberg recovered a fumble two plays later as Perham took over at the Park Rapids 32.

Park Rapids' defense held and the Panthers followed with a 13-play, 42-yard drive. Ian Johnson rushed five times for 29 yards and McCollum hit Noah MacPherson on a 9-yard route as the Panthers reached the Perham 34. That drive stalled when Brady Sazama intercepted a pass at the 22.

Park Rapids' defense forced a punt, but an interception and 15-yard return by Nordick helped Perham tie the game with a five-play, 37-yard drive. A 14-yard run by Payton Jordahl set up a 14-yard TD run by Hein as the game was tied at 6-6 with 3:07 to play in the first half.

Perham regained possession with 1:45 remaining and ended the half with an eight-play, 67-yard scoring drive. Hein hit Tyler Glines for 13 yards and rushed for 8 yards before capping off the drive with a 37-yard pass to Nordick. Nick Bahls' kick gave the Yellowjackets a 13-6 lead at the half.

Perham sealed the win by scoring on three of its first five possessions while holding the Panthers to only 85 yards in total offense in the second half.

After forcing the Panthers to punt on the opening series, Perham marched 60 yards in nine plays to build the lead. Jordahl rushed three times for 14 yards before Hein capped off the drive by following a 13-yard run with a 19-yard scoring run. Bahls added the extra point for a 20-6 lead with 7:00 remaining in the third quarter.

On Perham's next series, Andy Waller intercepted a pass at the Yellowjackets' 40 to start a 10-play, 60-yard scoring drive. An 8-yard pass from McCollum to Rilee Johnson, a 9-yard run by Ian Johnson, a 30-yard pass from McCollum to Kyle Goplerud and an 11-yard pass from McCollum to MacPherson set up a 5-yard TD pass from McCollum to MacPherson on fourth-and-goal. That cut the deficit to 20-12 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Yellowjackets sealed the win by scoring twice in the final quarter while holding Park Rapids' offense to only 18 yards.

Hein rushed five times for 33 yards, capping an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. Bahls' kick gave Perham a 27-12 lead with 8:47 to play. Josh Still had a 10-yard run and Bahls had a 20-yard run during that drive.

Perham forced two punts before sealing the win with a four-play, 31-yard drive by the reserves. A 16-yard punt return by Eli Beachy and two rushes for 14 yards by Beachy set up a 15-yard TD run by Beachy. The kick by Bahls concluded the scoring as Perham led 34-12 with 3:32 to go.

The Yellowjackets compiled 426 yards in offense. Hein (15 rushes for 98 yards) and Jordahl (13 rushes for 52 yards) helped the Yellowjackets gain 243 yards on the ground while Hein completed 14 of 24 passes for 183 yards with Nordick making four catches for 77 yards. Perham, which was rated No. 7 in this week's state Class AAA poll, improved to 2-0.

Park Rapids finished with 226 yards in total offense with McCollum completing 8 of 19 passes for 141 yards in his first varsity start at quarterback. MacPherson made four catches for 27 yards. Ian Johnson led the rushing attack with 47 yards on 16 carries as the Panthers fell to 0-2 on the season.

"I didn't think we played that bad. We executed better, but we didn't do a good job of tackling," said Morris. "You take away some missed tackles and the touchdown at the end of the half and we're right there. We're only going to get better. Hopefully we'll continue to improve and get a win this week."
