Legion drops pair of games to Detroit Lakes

Detroit Lakes used a 23-6 advantage in hits to sweep a doubleheader from the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team Monday night.

An 11-run seventh inning sealed Detroit Lakes' 15-1 win in the first game. Detroit Lakes followed by scoring four runs in the first and six runs in the fourth to complete the sweep with a 12-2 five-inning victory in the second game.

In the opener, Park Rapids loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on a walk to Drew Bade and singles by Cory Odland and Tyler McCollum, but couldn't score.

Detroit Lakes scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to build a 4-0 lead.

Walks to Rilee Johnson, Bade and Cory Gartner and an RBI single by Chris Goplerud produced Park Rapids' only run in the sixth.

Detroit Lakes sealed the win as six walks and two-run doubles by Connor McLeod and Jordan Manning sparked the 11-run seventh inning.

Goplerud went 2 for 3 as the Legion was held to only four hits. McCollum started and took the loss.

In the second game, Detroit Lake jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings before a six-run fourth sealed the win.

Park Rapids scored single runs in the second and fourth innings. Odland reached on an error and scored on McCollum's double in the second while a single by Odland, an error and walks to Cody Brumbaugh and Paul Prenevost produced the other run in the fourth.

Odland went 2 for 3 while Gartner and Kyle Goplerud had the other hits for the Legion. Odland started and took the loss for Park Rapids.

Walker forfeits games

Prior to the two losses to Detroit Lakes, the Legion had to forfeit two games and received two forfeit wins.

Because of a lack of players, the Legion had to forfeit both games against Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale on June 27.

The Legion also received a pair of forfeit wins on July 2 when Walker couldn't field enough players.

Brainerd defeats Legion

A 15-hit attack led Brainerd to an 11-3 win over the Legion on June 26.

Park Rapids scored a run in the second on a double by Johnson and an RBI single by Brumbaugh.

Singles by Prenevost and McCollum and a triple by Chris Goplerud led to the other two runs in the sixth.

Brainerd led the second game 5-3 when the game was called because of darkness in the fourth inning.
