Legion opens season with 3-1 league record

The Park Rapids American Legion baseball team opened the season by going 3-1 in league play and 5-5 overall.

Park Rapids opened the season by dropping two games at Detroit Lakes on June 5.

Rilee Johnson, Sam Coborn, Kyle Goplerud and Tyler McCollum accounted for Park Rapids' four hits in a 5-4 loss in the first game. Johnson, Cory Odland, Goplerud and McCollum scored the four runs while David Dirks took the loss, allowing nine hits and two earned run in seven innings.

In the second game, Detroit Lakes scored four times in the fourth and five times in the sixth to complete the sweep with a 15-5 victory. Zach Eystad and Drew Bade had two hits each while Eystad, Coborn, Odland, Goplerud and Bade scored the five runs. Park Rapids committed nine errors in the two losses.

Park Rapids opened league play with a 7-6 win at Wadena on June 8. A double by Bade and singles by Cory Gartner and Goplerud led to two runs in the first. Singles by Eystad, McCollum, Odland and Dirks produced three runs in the second. Singles by Bade, Dirks and Gartner led to the final two runs in the fourth. Dirks had two hits and two RBI, Bade had two hits and scored twice, and Odland scattered eight hits for the win.

Wadena won the second five-inning game 7-4. Park Rapids had six hits and committed seven errors in that game. Brad Eischens took the loss.

McCollum scattered eight hits while going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and five RBI as Park Rapids defeated Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale 13-3 in another league game. Eystad, Bade and McCollum had doubles during a four-run first. Singles by Eystad, Gartner, Odland and Dirks and a double by McCollum sparked a six-run second. Singles by Dirks, McCollum and Eischens led to three runs in the fifth.

Park Rapids also won the second five-inning game 12-11 by scoring four times in the fifth inning. Johnson had two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs while Odland had three hits and two RBI. Johnson also picked up the win in relief of Cody Brumbaugh and Gartner.

Dirks picked up the win as Park Rapids defeated Walker 14-3 on June 13. Singles by Eystad, Coborn, Odland, Dirks, Chris Goplerud and Brumbaugh led to five runs in the first. Coborn belted a solo homer in the second. Doubles by Eystad, Coborn and Dirks and singles by Eischens and Bade led to five runs in the third. A single by Brumbaugh, a double by Gartner and a triple by Eystad produced two runs in the fourth. Dirks' double capped off the scoring in the fifth.

Jalen Busker threw a no-hitter and struck out 10 in leading Staples-Motley to an 11-1 league win over the Legion on Monday. Kyle Goplerud reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch for Park Rapids' lone run. McCollum took the loss.

Staples won the second five-inning game 11-2. Gartner singled and scored on McCollum's double in the first while a double by Johnson and singles by Eischens and Dirks led to the other run in the fourth. Gartner took the loss.
