Coborn breaks scoring record

Sam Coborn became the all-time scoring leader in the history of the Park Rapids boys hockey program in style Thursday night.

Coborn scored two goals and added an assist in leading the Panthers to a 3-2 win at Red Lake Falls in a Section 8A battle. Coborn now has 214 points, breaking Zach Lehrke's previous record of 212.

Coborn opened the scoring with a goal at the 8:44 mark of the first period to tie Lehrke's record. Cory Odland and Ian Johnson assisted on that goal as the Panthers had a 10-8 edge in shots in the opening period. Coborn broke the school record by assisting on Johnson's goal at the 3:31 mark. The goal by Johnson gave him 100 career points to become the 11th player in school history to reach that milestone. Lucas Maves also had an assist on that goal. Coborn's shorthanded goal at the 4:27 mark increased the Panthers' lead to 3-0. Park Rapids controlled the second period with a 17-5 advantage in shots.

Red Lake Falls rallied in the third period behind Joe Berberena's goal at the 2:53 mark and Dylan Zutz's power-play goal at the 4:11 mark. Goalie Cody Brumbaugh made that lead hold up by finishing with 16 saves in the third period and 29 for the game.

The win lifted the Panthers to 5-7 against section opponents and 10-12 overall. Park Rapids defeated RLF 6-1 earlier in the season. The Eagles fell to 6-5 in section games and 9-13 overall.
