Johnson's hat trick keys win over W-DC

Ian Johnson's hat trick sparked the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hacken-sack-Akeley boys hockey team to an 8-1 Mid-State Conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday night at Wadena.

Cory Odland added two goals and two assists, Frank Moren had two goals and an assist, and Benson Ringle and Bailey Mueller had two assists each as the Panthers improved to 3-1 in Mid-State Conference play.

A power-play goal by Jake Krause gave W-DC a 1-0 lead after the first period. The Panthers held a 10-5 edge in shots in the opening period.

Park Rapids scored four times in a span of 5:12 in the second period to take control. Mueller and Ringle assisted on a goal by Odland at the 9:04 mark before Johnson followed with goals at the 10:24 and 11:08 marks. Odland and Ryan DeLaHunt had assists on Johnson's second goal. Luke Jaeger's goal at the 14:16 mark gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead. Park Rapids held a 12-3 advantages in shots.

The Panthers scored four more goals in the third period. Odland scored 4:57 into the period before Johnson completed his hat trick at the 8:37 mark. Johnson and Ringle set up Odland's goal while Odland and Moren had assists on Johnson's goal. Moren concluded the scoring with goals at the 9:44 and 13:12 marks. Mueller and Levi Erickson assisted on Moren's first goal while Noah MacPherson set up Moren's second goal. The Panthers had a 14-6 edge in shots in the final period.

Goalie Cody Brumbaugh saved 13 of 14 shots for the win as W-DC fell to 0-5 in the conference and 0-11 overall.

Panthers skate past RLF

Erickson's pair of goals and Brumbaugh's 23 saves led the Panthers to a 6-1 win over Red Lake Falls Saturday afternoon at Walker.

After Zack Landman opened the scoring to give RLF a 1-0 lead, the Panthers countered with goals by Moren at the 6:12 mark and Ringle at the 11:26 mark. MacPherson assisted on Moren's goal while Johnson had an assist on Ringle's goal.

A four-goal second period sealed the win. Johnson scored on the power play on assists from MacPherson and Ringle 1:53 into the period before Erickson tallied back-to-back goals at the 4:37 and 8:36 marks. Drew Bade earned an assist on Erickson's second goal. Ringle and Johnson set up MacPherson on a power-play goal at the 10:40 mark to conclude the scoring.

The Panthers held a 44-24 advantage in shots. The win lifted Park Rapids to 4-5 against Section 8A teams and 6-9 overall while RLF fell to 4-3 in the section and 7-10 overall.
