Panthers rally to edge Wolves

Pins by Cole Tretbar and Brandon Ritter in the final two matches rallied the Park Rapids wrestling team to a 41-38 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis in the final match of a triangular meet at the Century School gym Thursday night.

Frazee used five forfeits in the first six matches to open the triangular with a 51-18 victory over Park Rapids. Frazee followed by winning the first seven matches to spark a 49-18 win over WHAN before the Panthers rallied to defeat WHAN in the final match.

The split left the Panthers with an 8-7 record in dual meets.

Forfeits lift Frazee past Panthers

Frazee jumped out to a 30-6 lead en route to defeating the Panthers.

Ben Baumgartner's first-period pin at 126 pounds was the only win for the Panthers in the first six matches.

Zach Steffen's second-period takedown and third-period reversal led to a 4-3 minor decision at 152 and Forrest Drury used a first-period takedown and pair of reversals in the second period for a 6-2 minor decision at 170 as the Panthers trailed 42-12.

Brandon Ritter's first-period pin at heavyweight concluded the match.

Frazee entered the meet rated No. 8 in the latest state Class A poll.

Frazee defeats Wolves

Devin Wicks, Collin Huckbody, Christopher Zimmer and Nick Fisher had wins for WHAN in the loss to Frazee.

A takedown in the first period and an escape and takedown in the third period led Wicks to a 5-2 minor decision at 152. Huckbody followed with a first-period pin at 170 and Zimmer used an escape and two takedowns in the third period for a 5-4 minor decision at 195. Fisher's second-period pin at 220 accounted for the Wolves' other win.

Panthers rally past Wolves

Six pins in their seven wins were the difference as the Panthers edged the Wolves.

Nolan Booge's first-period pin at 106 and Jared Sunram's technical fall win at 113 staked the Panthers to an 11-0 lead. A takedown gave Sunram a 2-0 lead after the first period before two reversals and a nearfall pushed the lead to 10-2 after the second period. Three penalty points, a reversal and a nearfall completed the 17-2 victory.

Each team exchanged pins as Daniel Stacey's second-period pin at 120, Dylan Nistler's first-period pin at 132 and Blake Wiemann's first-period pin at 145 led WHAN while Baumgartner's first-period pin at 126 and Justin Dravis' second-period pin at 138 kept the Panthers in front 23-18.

Wicks earned his 100th career win with an 11-5 decision at 152. Two takedowns and a nearfall in the first period, a reversal in the second period, and a takedown and escape in the third period led Wicks to his win.

Joe Anderson's first-period pin at 160 and Huckbody's second-period pin at 170 gave the Wolves a 33-23 advantage with four matches to go.

Drury's first-period pin at 182 was offset by Zimmer's 16-1 technical fall win at 195 as WHAN held on to a 38-29 lead.

Tretbar's second-period pin at 220 and Ritter's first-period pin at heavyweight rallied the Panthers to the win.

Wicks (No. 8 at 152), Huckbody (No. 6 at 170) and Zimmer (No. 5 at 195) were rated in the latest state Class A poll.
