Panthers get back to .500 mark

Hannah Williams' two goals and Shania Johnson's 27 saves led the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team to a 4-1 win over Lake of the Woods Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Lake of the Woods controlled the first period by outshooting the Panthers 14-4, but Williams' goal at the 12:04 mark gave Park Rapids a 1-0 lead. Jessica Gapinski assisted on that goal.

Mady Vaudrin tipped in a rebound on a shot by Gapinski as the Panthers led 2-0 at the 10:51 mark of the second period. Jaylene Anderson's goal at the 4:26 mark pulled LOW to within 2-1 entering the final period.

Ashley Thelen's power-play goal with 4:07 to play extended the lead to 3-1 before Williams' goal with 1:59 left concluded the scoring. Alex Pederson received an assist on that goal as the Panthers held a 16-6 edge in shots in the third period.

Park Rapids improved to 2-3 against Section 8A teams and 6-6 overall. LOW fell to 0-5 in section games and 0-9 overall.

Panthers blank Devils

Gapinski's hat trick and two assists powered the Panthers to a 10-0 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/ Wadena-Deer Creek last Thursday night at Walker.

Thelen added two goals and Kendra Dresow had two assists as the Panthers held a 41-8 advantage in shots.

Gapinski opened the scoring before Julia Renner and Dresow assisted on a goal by Christina Smith. Thelen's first goal of the game gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead after the first period.

A shorthanded goal by Gapinski and a goal by Lauren Naeve pushed the lead to 5-0 after the second period.

Gapinski assisted on goals by Danika Aletto and Pederson before completing her hat trick in the third period. Thelen scored her second goal of the game while Dresow recorded her second assist of the game on a goal by Tayah Otterness.

Johnson stopped all eight shots she faced for the win as the Panthers posted their third shutout of the season. The Blue Devils fell to 1-5 on the year.
