Coborn, Erickson lift Panthers past Lakers

Park Rapids' Levi Erickson fired a shot past Detroit Lakes' Ethan Brekke (28) and Isaac Fondrick (24) during Tuesday night's game.

Sam Coborn and Levi Erickson combined for 10 points in leading the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 6-3 Mid-State Conference win over Detroit Lakes Tuesday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Coborn tallied a hat trick and three assists while Erickson had two goals and two assists as the Panthers posted their first win of the season.

Coborn's shorthanded goal opened the scoring before Benson Ringle and Erickson assisted on another goal by Coborn as the Panthers led 2-1 after the first period. Taylor Magnuson scored for the Lakers.

Erickson followed up a power-play goal with another goal as the Panthers extended their lead to 4-1. Coborn assisted on both goals while Frank Moren received an assist on the second goal. Coborn and Erickson then set up Ringle as Park Rapids carried a 5-2 advantage into the third period. Connor Collins scored the Lakers' goal.

Coborn completed his hat trick by scoring on a penalty shot late in the third period. Kyle Hermann tallied for Detroit Lakes, which went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Goalie Cody Brumbaugh made 33 saves for the win as the Panthers improved to 1-2 on the season.

Detroit Lakes fell to 3-3 despite holding a 36-30 edge in shots.
