Park Rapids girls run to title, boys tie for 5th place at PR Invitational

Both Park Rapids cross-country teams tuned up for the Section 8A meet with solid performances at Monday's Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters Country Club.

Lydia Lutz won the girls race by covering the 4,000-meter course in 14 minutes, 48 seconds to lead the Panthers to the team title with 61 points. Perham, which had its top runner (senior Cassie Beseman) sit out with an injury, was second in this 19-team meet with 62 points. Those two teams are expected to battle it out for the section title next Friday at Bagley. Park Rapids is rated No. 11 while Perham is rated No. 12 in this week's state Class A poll.

Perham, which is rated No. 2 in this week's state poll, ran away with the boys title with 25 points. Detroit Lakes was second with 58 points while Pelican Rapids was third with 142 points. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton was fourth with 151 points while Park Rapids tied Thief River Falls for fifth place with 165 points. Perham is the heavy favorite to defend its section title while D-G-F, Park Rapids and Staples-Motley are expected to vie for the other state berth next week.

In the girls race, Shelby Pierce finished seventh in 15:38, Summer Ellefson was 15th in 15:47, and Lora Remus and Megan Olson finished 25th and 26th in 16:28 and 16:32 as the Panthers claimed their fourth meet of the season. Abby Mueller was 44th in 17:30 and Maya Johnson finished 51st in 17:59 to complete Park Rapids' varsity.

Nevis had an incomplete team as Chloe Johnson (64th in 18:56) and Mattie Hjelseth (77th in 20:55) competed. A total of 84 runners competed in the varsity meet.

Isaac Overmyer led the Park Rapids boys by placing ninth in 17:20. Bailey Mueller finished 34th in 18:29, Jake Waggoner was 38th in 18:36, Tanner Otterness placed 39th in 18:40 and Ryan McBrady was 53rd in 19:32 to complete the Panthers' team score. Brad Eischens (66th in 20:09) and Austin Carlson (70th in 20:19) rounded out Park Rapids' varsity.

Brady Speicher covered the 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 16:42 as Perham had four runners in the top five spots. A total of 84 runners competed in the boys race.

In the junior varsity race, Nate Carlson (26th in 20:47), Jacob Hays (28th in 20:51), Nathanael Rairdon (46th in 22:15), Cody Brumbaugh (47th in 22:35), Matthew Konshok (48th in 22:40), Ben Kading (49th in 22:49) and Nick Schulz (52nd in 23:04) competed for Park Rapids in the boys race while Morgan Olson (eighth in 18:21) competed for the Panthers in the girls race.

In the junior high race, Jacob Bridgman (33rd in 14:15), Cole Coborn (34th in 14:16), Zach Nelson (49th in 16:18) and Cameron Hoyt (69th in 19:06) competed for Park Rapids in the boys 3,200-meter race while Kendra Coborn (13th in 15:21), Kinley Nordin (30th in 16:39), Whitney Steffel (33rd in 16:57) and Teresita Diaz (51st in 20:32) completed the girls 3,200-meter race.

Bagley will host the Section 8A meet next Friday. The girls race starts at 4 p.m. followed by the boys race.
